October 14, 2016: Hurricane Nicole damaged roofs and uprooted trees in Bermuda, before moving out into the Atlantic Ocean.
According to Bermuda Electric Light Company Ltd (BELCO), more than 27,000 households were left without power. Several schools, government offices and bank offices have been closed in Bermuda on October 14 to assess damage and conduct clean up.
At 11:00 pm AST on October 13, Hurricane Nicole was located 410 km NE of Bermuda. However, the swells associated with Nicole will continue to affect Bermuda and the United States east coast from the Carolinas northward for the next couple of days.
Hurricane Nicole is currently moving to the northeast at 21 m.p.h. and has weakened to a category 2 Hurricane with max. winds at 100 m.p.h.
Hurricane Nicole is the first major hurricane to make landfall on the Bermuda island since Hurricane Fabian in 2003.
Last week, Hurricane Matthew devastated parts of Haiti, killing hundreds of people.
