September 30, 2016: Hurricane Matthew, the fifth hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, triggered flooding and landslides on eastern Caribbean islands claiming life of a person.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for Bonaire, Curacao and Aruba along Colombia/Venezuela border to Riohacha.

At 03:00 UTC on September 29, 2016, Hurricane Matthew was located 200 km N of Curacao and 960 km ESE of Kingston Jamaica. 


Government offices in Aruba have been closed today and Curacao's parliamentary elections have been postponed until next week.

Currently at 03:00 UTC, the center of Hurricane Matthew is located by an Air Force Hurricane Hunter plane near latitude 14.1 North, longitude 68.8 West. Matthew is moving toward the west near
14 mph (22 km/h), National Hurricane Center mentions in a public advisory.

Projected Path of Hurricane Matthew


Based on current projection, Hurricane Matthew poses a danger to Jamaica, parts of Hispañola, eastern Cuba, and the Bahamas early next week.

Global models, primarily the GFS and the ECMWF, continue to show a strong hurricane in the vicinity of Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti in 3 or 4 days.

Tropical storm conditions are possible in Bonaire, Curacao and Aruba tonight and Friday. Similarly, rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches with isolated higher amounts are expected over Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao through Saturday.
