Four earthquakes recorded in Koyna, Maharashtra in last two days

At least four mild earthquakes have been recorded in Koyna region of Maharashtra in last two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India reported.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the first tremor in the sequence was magnitude 3.9 earthquake at 6:53 pm on May 18, 2016. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 5 km.

It was followed by magnitude 3.7 earthquake at 10:59 pm. At midnight 12:47 am, another light earthquake of magnitude 4.0 was recorded in Koyna region of Maharashtra.

The latest earthquake in the sequence was magnitude 3.5 quake at 11:37 pm on May 19, 2016. The earthquake occurred at 15 km depth.

No preliminary damage or injuries have been reported.

Koyna region of Maharashtra is one of the most seismically active zone which lies in Zone IV of earthquake hazard zoning.

More than two dozens of moderate to strong earthquakes have been recorded in or near Koyna region since 20th Century. The strongest earthquake in this region was magnitude 6.5 earthquake on December 11, 1967. The great 1967 Koynanagar earthquake claimed lives of at least 180 people.
