Houston, Texas Flood 2016 kills 8; State of disaster declared

Flooding triggered by torrential downpours in Houston area has claimed lives of eight people and damaged some 1,150 homes this week.

The catastrophic flooding has caused more than $5 billion in damage, CNN reported. The Houston-area community of Hockley got pummeled with 17 inches of rain in less than 24 hours.

Gov. Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster for nine counties in and around the Houston area.

According to the Reuters, the weather service has issued a flood watch from central Texas through Houston and into large parts of Louisiana.
