The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has helped Vietnam for a new disaster risk management program in response to the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
According to the Government of Viet Nam, the project is expected to benefit an estimated 20,000 people in Bac Lieu, Hoa Binh, and Quang Tri provinces by helping them be better prepared for natural disasters. This project will be implemented by the Viet Nam Red Cross (VNRC).
Since 2000, USAID through its Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) has provided more than US$14 million to address emergency response needs and disaster risk management activities in Viet Nam.
Viet Nam, at high risk to the impacts of global climate change, leads to weather related disasters causing on average over 400 deaths and economic losses equivalent to more than one per cent of national GDP. Between 2013 and October 2015, Viet Nam experienced eight tropical cyclones, with heavy rains and strong winds that affected more than 2 million people.
Around one third of Viet Nam’s most vulnerable communes have developed
disaster risk reduction plans reducing 8% annual death rate, UN Development Programme said in April 2015.
