ADB approves $251 million for urban flood protection and management in India

September 24, 2021: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $251 million for urban flood protection and management in India. The loan has been issued for integrated flood management of the Chennai–Kosasthalaiyar river basin. The loan will be utilized to establish climate-resilient urban flood protection infrastructure. 

Global disasters caused $140bn economic losses in 2019

January 1, 2020: Total economic losses from natural and man-made catastrophes fell to around USD 140 billion in 2019 from USD 176 billion last year,  Swiss Reinsurance Institute said. MyShake earthquake app to send earthquake early warning in California

October 18, 2019: With the help of MyShake app , all Californians will be able to receive warnings before the major earthquakes. Ground motion sensors from across the state will be used to detect earthquakes and the notifications will be sent out to give Californians a second to tens of seconds earlier to take precautions. The MyShake app is now available for download to iOS and Android devices which allows earthquake warning messages to reach Californians statewide. Earthquake early warning works because communications networks can receive and send messages faster than seismic waves travel. Earthquake early warning system can warn of quakes as much as a few minutes before they strike. Kerala Flood Cess in force for a period two years

October 17, 2019: A one percent flood Cess on goods and services has been imposed in Kerala to raise the fund required for re-construction of State after the devastating flood occurred in the State during August 2018. The Kerala flood Cess rules 2019 has been implemented from 01st August 2019 for a period of two years i.e till July 2021. The flood Cess will be used for funding the post-flood rebuilding projects. The state intends to raise about ₹600 crore from the Cess.  According to the Goods and Services Tax Department of Kerala, no separate registration required for the payment of Kerala Flood Cess. GSTIN will be treated as Registration Number for Kerala Flood Cess. Great ShakeOut 2019: Earthquake drill set for October 17 across United States

October 17, 2019: The annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill will take place Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m. across the United States . The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region III office has urged the people to participate and learn the simple but critical safety steps to preparing for and staying safe during an earthquake. The Great ShakeOut is the largest earthquake drill worldwide and people need to practice Drop, Cover, and Hold  to survive and recover quickly from the next big earthquake , FEMA mentioned in its news release . During the self-led drill, participants practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On.” For most people, in most situations, the recommended earthquake safety action is to: DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees; COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand, as you crawl for shelter under a nearby table or desk; HOLD ON to your shelter with one hand until shaking stops (remain on your knees and covering your head and neck with

India Disaster Preparedness: Govt to conduct state-wide mock drill today

May 19, 2018: The Odisha Government is going to conduct a state-wide mock drill today to check efficacy of the preparedness of disaster management ahead of the monsoon season. According to the Odisha TV , the mock drill on management of flood and cyclone will be held at all 879 multipurpose cyclone shelters in state. During the drill the volunteers will take part in disaster management drills along with the members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), Fire Service Department and local NGOs.

Indian Central Government allots Rs 218cr to Uttarakhand for disaster relief

May 17, 2018: The central government of India has allotted Rs 218 crores to Uttarakhand towards its State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The disaster relief will be used to provide immediate relief to those affected by natural calamities like earthquake, floods, fire etc. According to The Times of India , the state government has already released Rs 5 crore each to all 13 districts in the state to provide relief in cases of monsoon-related disasters. Heavy rainfall caused devastating floods and landslides across Northern India in 2013 claiming lives of thousands of people.

USAID helps Viet Nam better prepare for natural disasters

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has helped Vietnam for a new disaster risk management program in response to the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction . According to the Government of Viet Nam, the project is expected to benefit an estimated 20,000 people in Bac Lieu, Hoa Binh, and Quang Tri provinces by helping them be better prepared for natural disasters . This project will be implemented by the Viet Nam Red Cross (VNRC).
