Snowstorms hit US East coast, New York City declares snow alert

Snowstorms hit northern Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and southern New England leading snow alert in New York City.

A snow alert was issued by the New York City Department of Sanitation that began at 6 a.m. A winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service for New York City, Nassau County, most of north and central New Jersey.

All classes in schools in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York have been cancelled.

More than 1,600 flights have been cancelled, Xinhua reported.
