2012 saw many natural disasters across the globe. Hurricane Sandy was one of the most prominent disasters of the year in the U.S. which killed at least 125 people and caused damage of $62 billions. Most of the United States was hit by extreme weather. Researchers say that the 2012 drought is the worst since 1988. Major earthquakes struck in Italy, the Philippines, Iran, and Afghanistan. The Philippines were also slammed by Typhoon Bopha, which killed more than 1,000 people.

Did you feel it? - Report an Earthquake
  • M 4.5 moderate deep earthquake in Hindu Kush Region, Afghanistan (@ 113 km depth) with epicenter located 91 km SE from Feyzabad. People of Chitral, Mingaora (Pakistan), Khorugh (Tajikistan) and Kabul (Afghanistan) will have felt weak shaking of MMI II-III.

  • Light earthquake reported in Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh, India. Tremors were felt by the people of Narsipatnam, Makavarapupalem, Rolugunta, Koyyuru and Madugula mandals of Visakhapatnam.
  • M 4.6 moderate deep earthquake near the East Coast of Honshu, Japan (@ 101 km depth) with epicenter located 15 km SSE of Hachinohe. Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Ichinohe, Oirase-cho, Misawa and Kazuno.

Recent Volcanic Activity
Erupting Volcanoes: Fuego, Santiago, Poas, Reventador, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Raung, Erta Ale, Paluweh, Gamalama, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Manam, Ulawun, Tolbachik and Kilauea volcano.


Recent Tropical Cyclones
  • Tropical Cyclone Dumile
    -As of 12:00 UTC,  TC Dumlie was located 565 nm north of La Reunion.
    -The maximum Storm surge height is expected to be 0.1m in Voloina, Madagascar.
    -Green Tropical Cyclone alert (by GDACS) is issued for Dumile-13.
  • Tropical Cyclone Freda
    -As of 04:00 UTC, TC Freda was located 355 nm northwest of Noumea, New Caledonia.

  • Cold wave in Phoenix, Arizona
    -A Freeze Warning is issued by the National Weather Service for much of central and southwest Arizona, including the Phoenix metro area.
