  • Massive snowstorm in U.S. Midwest
    -Eight killed in recent U.S. Midwest snowstorms. Fatalities are reported from Utah, Kansas, Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska.
    -The Weather Channel said around 27 centimetres of snow covered parts of Wisconsin, with around 20 centimetres in Omaha, Nebraska.
    -Snowstorm canceled more than 600 flights at Chicago's two airports, O'Hare and Midway. Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines also canceled their flights.
    -Most major roads across Iowa remained closed due to snow and ice buildup.
    -Many schools across Nebraska and Iowa were closed. Final exams at University of Wisconsin at Madison was also  canceled.
    -According to the National Weather Service, blizzard warnings were in effect in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.
    -Avalanche warning is currently issued for Mount Shasta as four to seven feet of snow is forecast to fall (Photo: Snow-covered cars in a parking lot in Madison, Wisconsin, AP).

  • Flooding in Lebanon
    -Heavy rainfall caused flooding across Lebanon.
    -Sidon and Tyre ports in southern Lebanon was closed due to floods.
    -Rainfall also caused landslide which closed the Rmeileh highway linking Beirut to Sidon.
    -Many roads in the mountain areas in north and east Lebanon were blocked by snow.
    Update
    -Heavy traffic jam is reported in Tripoli, north Lebanon on the Minyeh-Abdeh road due to flooding.

  • M 6.8 strong deep sea quake in Vanuatu (@ 208 km depth) with epicenter located 63 km SSW of Sola. People of Sola, Luganville, Port-Olry and Norsup will have felt light shaking of MMI IV.

  • M 5.0 moderate earthquake in Honshu, Japan (@ 35 km depth) with epicenter located 54 km SSE of Ofunato. Light to weak shaking will have felt y the people of Ishinomaki, Yamoto, Wakuya, Hitachi, Sendai, Misawa and Fukushima.

  • M 4.5 moderate earthquake in Nias region, Indonesia (@ 63 km depth) with epicenter located 68 km SW of Padangsidempuan. It will have faintly felt by the people of Sibolga, Bandar and Rantauprapat.

  • M 4.3 light shallow earthquake Offshore Guatemala (@ 36 km depth) with epicenter located 91 km S of Champerico. It will have faintly felt by the people of Nueva Concepcion, Pueblo Nuevo Tiquisate and La Gomera.

  • M 2.5 weak shallow earthquake in Nevada 9@ 7 km depth) with epicenter located 23 km SSW from Schurz. It will have well felt by the people of Wichman, Yerington, Hawthorne, Sparks and Santa Rosa (California).

Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Afghanistan (Amu Darya), Australia (Darling), Bolivia (Madre de Dios), Brazil (Tocantins), Chad (N Djamena), China (Mekong and Huang He), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ubangi), Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq (Shatt al Arab and Tigris), Kenya (Tana), Philippines, Sudan (Blue Nile, White Nile), Syria (Euphrates), Tanzania.
  • Flooding in Long Eaton, England
    -Train delayed between Derby and Long Eaton due to flooding.
    -Roads in the Doncaster and Dearne areas were also closed due to flooding as heavy rain continues in South Yorkshire.
    -Train services were disrupted between Gleneagles and Perth after a landslip.
    -Portmoak Primary in Perth and Kinross has been closed.

Erupting Volcanoes: Fuego, Santiago, Poas, Reventador, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Raung, Erta Ale, Paluweh, Gamalama, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Manam, Ulawun, Tolbachik and Kilauea volcano.

There is no tropical storm activity today.

  • Tornado in Mobile, Alabama
    -Tornado in Mobile destroyed ten houses. The American Red Cross office in Mobile suffered heavy damage due to tornado.
    -According to Alabama Power officials, about 54,700 customers throughout the state lost power.
  • One woman reported to be killed due to cold wave  in Gareyala VDC in Rukum, Nepal.
