Recent Natural Disasters

• Landslides in Sankhuwasabha, Nepal
  -Landslides damaged 25 houses and two school buildings at Hatiya village of Sankhuwasabha district of Nepal.
  -About 200 people displaced by the disaster and are taking shelter in makeshift huts.

• M 4.1 moderate earthquake in California (@ 9 km depth) with epicenter located just 3 km NE of Yorba Linda. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Placentia, Villa Park, Chino Hills, Anaheim, Fullerton and Santa Ana. People of Long Beach, Los Angeles, Riverside and North Glendale will have felt weak shaking of MMI III.

• M 5.5 moderate earthquake in Japan (@ 54 km depth) with epicenter located 51km E of Ishinomaki. Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the of Ishinomaki, Yamoto, Wakuya, Ofunato, Kogota and Shiogama. Weak shaking of MMI III will have felt by the people of Sendai, Yamagata, Fukushima, Morioka and Akita.

• M 3.3 weak shallow earthquake in California (@ 8 km depth) with epicenter located 21km N of Inyokern. Just a weak shaking will have felt by the people of Ridgecrest, California City and Tehachapi.

Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Argentina, Australia (River Murray), Botswana (Selinda), Brazil (River Tocantins), Burkina Faso, Cameroon (River Benue), Chad, China (River Mekong, River Huang He and River Brahmaputra), Democratic Republic of the Congo (River Ubangi), Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, Honduras, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria (River Benue), Peru (River Ucayali, River Putamayo), Sudan (River Blue Nile), Uruguay, Venezuela (River Orinoco) and Zimbabwe (River Zambezi).

• Flash floods in Charleston, South Carolina
  -A number of downtown colleges have canceled classes due to flooding.

• Hurricane Isaac
  -As of 01:00 UTC, Hurricane Isaac was located 50 km WSW of the mouth of the Mississippi River and 120 km SSE of New Orleans, Louisiana.
  -Isaac moving slowly northwestward along the coast of southeast Louisiana and dangerous storm surge continues along the northern Gulf Coast.
