M 5.6 strong earthquake shakes Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon and Egypt today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was centered in Eastern Mediterranean Sea with epicenter located 83 km (51 miles) SSW of Kalkan (Turkey). It was 29.1 miles deep.
Local Turkish seismological centers like Kandili Observatory and Bogazici University reported magnitude 6.0 with depth of 51 km.
According to USGS PAGER MAP, Light shaking of MMI IV will have felt by the people of Kas, Archangelos, Lardos, Afantou, Faliraki, Rodos and Fethiye. Weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Marmaris, Mugla, Bodrum and Antalya.
Egypt: Tremors were felt as far as Cairo, the capital city of Egypt. The 1992 Cairo earthquake (M 5.8) with an epicenter near Dahshur, 35 km south of Cairo killed 545 peoples.
Turkey: Tremors were felt in the Turkish provinces of Antalya, Muğla and other cities along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. M 7.1 earthquake in Van, Turkey in 2011 killed 605 peoples.
Israel: It was felt from Be'ersheva in the south to Tiberias of Israel including Haifa, Rishon Lezion and Kiryat Gat.
The 1222 Cyprus earthquake of magnitude 7.5 triggered a tsunami that was recorded in Libya and Alexandria.
The Mediterranean region is seismically active due to the northward convergence (4-10 mm/yr) of the African plate with respect to the Eurasian plate along a complex plate boundary.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
