Typhoon Kompasu kills 11 in Philippines

October 12, 2021:  Typhoon Kompas u (called "Maring" in Philippines) has claimed lives of eleven people and left seven others missing in Philippines . More than 6,500 villagers have been evacuated from flood affected areas. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), fatalities have been reported from Benguet, Cagayan and Palawan province. The Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) was on ALERT STATUS RED since the start of the natural disaster . According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), Kompasu will make landfall in upper Vietnam on Wednesday or Thursday. Heavy rain is expected in Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon and Bueng Kan provinces in Thailand.

Volcanic eruption on La Palma in Spanish Canary Islands destroys 100 houses

September 22, 2021: A volcano eruption on La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands has destroyed around 100 houses and forced the evacuation of about 5,500 residents. The authorities are closely monitoring fires that may start from the burning lava of Cumbre Vieja volcano. Evacuation orders have been issued for El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. According to Copernicus Emergency Management Service, the lava from the volcano has spread over 154 hectares in the towns of El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez flew to La Palma to oversee rescue efforts.

Flooding in Gujarat affects Jamnagar and Rajkot, three killed

September 14, 2021: Recent flooding in Gujarat has claimed lives of three people and left five others missing Two people died in Jamnagar and one in Rajkot. Around 1,300 have been asked to evacuate and move to the upper areas in Rajkot city Also around 4200 people have been evacuated from Jamnagar district. Schools and colleges have been closed due to the floodwater in Rajkot city and adjoining areas.

Flash floods in Abuja, Nigeria kill four

September 14, 2021: Recent flash floods in the Nigerian capital Abuja and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have claimed lives of four people. According to the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the illegal building construction and blocked drainage channels have worsen the flood situation in the city.

NEPAL: Landslide in Parbat kills 6

September 3, 2021: A landslide in Parbat district of Nepal has claimed lives of six people and left two others missing. The recent natural calamity was triggered due to heavy rainfall in the district affecting Durlung of Kushma Municipality and Modi Mural Municipality. Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and locals have been involved in the rescue operation.

Hurricane Ida kills 14, prompts flash flood emergency in New York City

September 2, 2021: Hurricane Ida, the second most intense hurricane to strike the U.S. state of Louisiana, has claimed lives of fourteen people. Seven people died in New York, three in Louisiana, two in Mississippi, one in Maryland, and one in New Jersey. Hurricane Ida caused at least $15 billion in insured losses in Louisiana. The storm caused severe damage across the coastal areas of Louisiana, including in New Orleans, Golden Meadow, Houma, Galliano, LaPlace, and Grand Isle. On August 29, tornado watches were issued for parts of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.   States of emergency have been declared in New York and New Jersey as well as New York City itself.

Haiti Earthquake 2021: At least 724 killed and 2,800 injured

August 15, 2021: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Haiti has claimed lives of at least 724 people and injured 2,800 people. The earthquake occurred at the  Tiburon Peninsula in the Caribbean nation of Haiti on the island of Hispaniola on August 14, 2021. Haiti earthquake has been categorized as the deadliest earthquake of 2021 which occurred near Petit-Trou-de-Nippes, approximately 150 kilometres west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. According to the United States Geological Survey(USGS), the earthquake occurred as a result of oblique-reverse faulting on the Enriquillo–Plantain Garden fault zone. The earthquake was also strongly felt in Jamaica. According to the Haitian Civil Protection Agency, the Haiti earthquake destroyed at least 860 homes and 700 others have been damaged. Nepal Floods: Flash flooding in Melamchi kills 7, leaves 60 missing

June 17, 2021: Flash flooding in Helambu and Melamchi areas of Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal have claimed lives of seven people and left sixty others missing. Two fatalities have been identified as Chinese national working at Melamchi Drinking Water Project. Still six Melamchi Drinking Water Project staffs have gone missing including one Chinese national, three Indians and two Nepalese. The recent flood and landslides have damaged around 260 houses and displaced more than 600 people. The helicopters of Nepal Army have been deployed for flood management and the rescue efforts. INDIA: Chamoli glacial outburst flood kills 26, leaves 200 missing

February 8, 2021: A glacial outburst flood in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand region of India has claimed lives of 26 people and left around 200 people missing. The flooding occurred after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier broke off early on 7th of February. The flood damaged the Rishiganga dam on Alaknanda river. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army have been involved for the rescue operation. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has announced Rs 4 lakh financial assistance each for the families of those killed in the disaster.

Floods and landslides in Paraguay kill 10

February 5, 2021: Heavy floods and landslide triggered by heavy rainfall have claimed lives of at least 10 people in central and southern Paraguay over the past few days. Five people died in the Central Department, our in the Asuncion Metropolitan area and one in the Itapua Department.

Tropical Cyclone Eloise kills 12 in Mozambique and Zimbabwe

January 24, 2021: Tropical Cyclone Eloise has claimed lives of nine people in Mozambique and three in Zimbabwe. Cyclone Eloise caused damage in in Beira, Manica, and Quelimane areas of  Mozambique. According to the Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), the cyclone has damaged around 1069 homes, 11 hospitals and nine schools. Tropical Cyclone Eloise made landfall just south of the port city of Beira, Mozambique on January 23, 2021.  Eloise is the 5th named storm of the 2020/21 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season.

Indonesia: Flooding in Kalimantan kills 15

January 20, 2021: Recent flooding in Indonesian province of South Kalimantan has claimed lives of 15 people.  Flooding has affected nearly 10 districts and cities in South Kalimantan Province. President Joko Widodo has described it as the worst flood in the past 50 years.

Flooding in Telangana kills 50 people — Heavy October rain in Hyderabad after 129 years

October 16, 2020: At least 50 people have been killed in Telangana state of India, many of them in the capital Hyderabad. According to the India Meteorological Office (IMD), Ghatkesar received record rainfall of 322 mm from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. Hyderabad has last seen such heavy October rains after 129 years. Hyderabad has set a record of wettest year in 2020 with 404% more than normal annual rainfall. 

NEPAL: Eleven killed, 20 missing in landslides in Sindhupalchowk

September 13, 2020:  At least eleven people died and 20 remain missing in two separate landslides at three settlements in Barhabise Municipality of Sindhupalchowk district of Nepal. Bodies of seven women and four men have been recovered from the landslides area. Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police and local people have been involved in search operations.

Recent flooding in Sudan kills 93

September 2, 2020: At least 93 people have been killed while more than 380,000 people have been affected by severe floods in Sudan. North Darfur has been worst hit with 90,505 people affected by the flood. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), more than 37,000 homes have been destroyed.

Major flooding in Madhya Pradesh, India kills 24

September 3, 2020: At least 24 people have been killed and 11,000 people have been displaced after heavy rains causing flooding in Madhya Pradesh, India. Heavy rainfall caused the Narmada River at Hoshangabad to rise around 2 m above the danger mark. According to the India’s Disaster Management Division, recent flooding has affected 33.000 people across 1,906 villages and 28 districts of the state. A total of 11 197 homes have also been damaged.
