Darfur, Sudan — October 1, 2025:
More than 1,000 people have been killed after a massive landslide buried an entire village in Sudan’s western Darfur region, according to a statement by the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A). The group, which controls the affected area in the Marra Mountains, has urgently appealed for United Nations assistance to recover bodies and provide emergency relief.
The disaster struck after days of torrential rain, triggering widespread flooding and landslides that swept through mountain villages. Entire communities have been destroyed, and survivors are struggling without food, medicine, or shelter.
According to the Reuters news agency, many of those killed or missing in the Marra Mountains had fled earlier clashes in North Darfur and were taking refuge in the highlands, hoping for safety from the violence.
However, severe food shortages, limited medical supplies, and restricted humanitarian access have worsened the suffering in the region. Aid groups warn that Darfur is already facing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with famine-like conditions spreading rapidly.
