Gov. Ron DeSantis Declares State of Emergency for South Florida

June 13, 2024: Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in Miami-Dade, Broward, and several other Florida counties following a torrential downpour that caused life-threatening flash floods, inundating the region. This significant decision underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for swift action and resources to address the widespread impact.

Executive Order Focuses on Five Counties

On Wednesday night, DeSantis signed an executive order focusing on five counties: Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier, Lee, and Sarasota. This order facilitates the rapid mobilization of emergency resources and expedites preparations to safeguard affected communities. In his statement, DeSantis emphasized the severity of the situation:

"I declare that a major state of emergency exists in Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties."

Impact on Residents

The flash floods have severely affected the daily lives of residents in South Florida. Victor Corone, 66, and his wife Maria Diaz, 64, experienced the devastating impact firsthand. On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Corone had to push Diaz in a wheelchair through more than a foot of flood water on 84th Street in Miami Beach. Despite having a doctor's appointment, they had to abandon their car in a parking lot on Collins Ave and walk more than 20 minutes to get home.

Rainfall and Forecast

According to the executive order, portions of South Florida received 10 to 15 inches of rainfall, severely affecting major interstates, roadways, airports, and schools. The situation remains critical as additional heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecasted over several days. These conditions could exacerbate the already dire circumstances, making the emergency response all the more crucial.

Emergency Resources and Preparation

The state of emergency declared by Gov. DeSantis enables a more efficient and rapid deployment of emergency resources. It ensures local authorities can swiftly protect lives, manage the floodwaters, and mitigate further damage. The executive order allows for allocating state funds and resources to support the affected counties' recovery efforts.

Community Response

The community response to the floods has been one of resilience and solidarity. Despite the challenges, residents work together to navigate the floodwaters and support one another. Emergency services are on high alert, and relief efforts are being coordinated to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
