The Northridge earthquake in 1994 killed 57 people and injured more than 8,700 others. The earthquake damage was estimated to be $13–50 billion making it one of the costliest natural disasters in the United States.

The Northridge earthquake also caused the outbreak of coccidioidomycosis in Ventura County.
