M7.5 earthquake in New Zealand triggers tsunami

According to the GeoNet, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit New Zealand's South Island at midnight, some 20 km SE of Hanmer Springs and 95 km from Christchurch on November 14, 2016. A tsunami alert has been issued for all coastal areas of New Zealand. Below are latest updates:

-Two people confirmed dead. One of them died after being trapped in a collapsed building in Kaikoura. Another person died in Mt Lyford.
-The tsunami warnings were downgraded to coastal warnings on Monday later morning.
-Helicopters were deployed to move people and resources to Kaikoura. A Welfare Centre was open at the Kaikoura Marae.

GeoNet has upgraded the magnitude from M6.6 to M7.5 at a depth of 15 km.

Latest updates by MCDEM mentions tsunami waves expected to arrive at the Chatham islands immediately. Anyone in the Chathams are urgently noticed to move to high ground.

According to the NZ Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM), the first wave may not be the largest. However, the waves may continue for several hours.

November 13, 2016: The GeoNet said the magnitude-6.6 quake hit New Zealand's South Island at midnight, some 20 km SE of Hanmer Springs and 95 km from Christchurch.

The earthquake occurred at 12:02 am midnight on November 14, 2016 at a depth of 16 km. 

According to the New Zealand Herald, Civil Defence has issued a tsunami warning for the eastern coast of the South Island and says anyone near the coast should move to high ground

The tremor was felt as far as Wellington to Dunedin.

Following GeoNet Online Service, "very large" tremor was felt through much of the country which includes Taranaki, Hamilton and Auckland.

The New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Management (MCDEM) has warned of possible aftershocks.

In 2011, magnitude 6.3 earthquake in Christchurch killed 185 people causing 3.5 m tsunami waves in Tasman Lake.
