Flooding in Palestine, Texas kills six including 4 children — Worst in 59 yrs

Flooding in Palestine, Texas has claimed lives of six people, including four children early Saturday morning.

The woman and her four grandchildren died in Palestine, Texas after being swept away by floodwater through the 100 block of Timber Drive, Reuters reported. Fatalities included 64-year-old Lenda Asberry, and her four great-grandchildren all aged below 10 years old.

Another 30-year-old Giovani Olivas of Palestine was swept away by flood waters on a county road, NBCDFW reported.

Palestine Mayor Bob Herrington signed an emergency declaration at 1:30 p.m. mentioning that the City of Palestine has suffered the worst flooding event in his 59 years of living here.

"Total damage estimates will be developed in the near future and will be available to interested parties," Bob Herrington said.

The United Way has approved $25,000 in funds to aid victims of the Palestine flooding. A GoFundMe page has also been set up for those that want to donate. All fees charged by the website will be reimbursed by United Way, according to the Palestine Herald-Press.

A temporary shelter has been set up in the police training room at Palestine Mall and the Red Cross. The Red Cross is helping 20 to 30 residents displaced by flooding in Palestine, Texas.

Tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma

According to The Weather Channel, at least two people were injured Friday night after tornadoes touched down in parts of Texas and Oklahoma.

A tornado touched Sherman, Texas, with no immediate reports of injuries or damages. A second tornado was reported in Lindale, causing injuries and multiple damages to structures in the area.
