Stormy weather, flooding cause chaos in Dunedin and Auckland

Heavy rainfall triggered flooding in Dunedin and caused power to about 150 homes.

Dunedin City Council road maintenance engineer Peter Standring said Radio New Zealand that some residents in south Dunedin had used sandbags to protect property and had considered moving out.
The army was placed on standby in Mosgiel in case the Silver Stream burst its banks. The Southern District Health Board has set up an emergency operations centre in Dunedin.

Similarly, heavy rain has flooded a laboratory at Auckland City Hospital and a number of houses around the city. Lightning has also struck a house in Titirangi and a fallen tree has blocked a main road in Hunua, The New Zealand Herald mentioned.
