Recent Natural Disasters 
  • Tropical Cyclone Rusty
    -As of 12:00 UTC, TC Rusty was located 65nm east of Port Hedland, Australia.
    -Rusty made landfall in Pardoo town in Western Australia.
    -A red alert has been issued by Australia's Department of Fire and Emergency Services for Pardoo and nearby Whim Creek. Similarly a blue alert is in effect between Nullagine and Newman.
    -Three main iron ore ports (including Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals) in the Pilbara region (also the world's largest source of iron ore) have been closed.
    -Tropical cyclone Rusty is forecast to bring rain to most parts of the Goldfields from tomorrow (February 28, 2013).
    -Rusty is the third tropical cyclone in Western Australia this season.

  • Avalanche in north Lebanon
    -One killed and three people have been injured in an avalanche in Cedar's Qornet al-Sawda region in the north Lebanon.

  • M 2.5 weak shallow earthquake in Oklahoma (@ 5 km depth) with epicenter located 6 km SSE of Choctaw. It will have well felt by the people of Choctaw, Midwest City, Del city and Oklahoma City.

  • M 4.0 light shallow earthquake in Romania (@ 5 km depth) with epicenter located 3 km N Racovita. It will have well felt by the people of Avrig, Tălmaciu and Râmnicu vâlcea.

Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Afghanistan (Amu Darya), Australia (Darling), Bolivia (Madre de Dios), Brazil (Tocantins), Chad (N Djamena), China (Mekong and Huang He), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ubangi), Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq (Shatt al Arab and Tigris), Kenya (Tana), Philippines, Sudan (Blue Nile, White Nile), Syria (Euphrates), Tanzania.
  • Flooding and landslides in Kenya
    -Kenya Metrological Department has warned the people to prepare for flash floods, lightning and landslides in the coming rainy season between March and May.
    -Budalang’i, Kano and Tana River have to experience flooding while lightning strikes could occur in Kisii and Kakamega counties in western Kenya.
    -The 2007 African floods killed 12 Kenyans.


Recent Volcanic Activity
Erupting Volcanoes: Fuego, Santiago, Poas, Reventador, Nyiragongo, Ol Doniyo Lengai, Raung, Erta Ale, Paluweh, Gamalama, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Manam, Ulawun, Tolbachik and Kilauea volcano.
  • Arequipa, Peru/Sabancaya recent volcanic activity
    -A seismic swarm has been observed at Sabancaya volcano in Arequipa, Chile.
    -Peru geological agency has recorded  around 536 tremors on Feb. 22 and 23.
    -The Civil Defense of the Regional Government of Arequipa has raised the volcano alert level to yellow.
