Recent Natural Disasters
  • Typhoon Haikui in China
    -Three killed by Typhoon Haikui in eastern China.
    -Authorities moved nearly two million people to safety. At least seven people reported to be injured.
    -Typhoon Haikui made landfall early on Wednesday morning in Zhejiang province south of Shanghai.
    -Typhoon Haiikui is expected to be the worst since 2005, when Typhoon Matsa killed seven people.
    Zhegiang province: More than four million people affected; economic losses of over 10 billion yuan ($1.57 billion); about 4,400 houses destroyed.

    -As of 01:00 UTC, TS Gilma was located 1120 km SW of the southern tip of Baja California. Gilma remains just below hurricane strength.
    -Gilma is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph.
    -Some strengthening is possible tonight and Gilma could become a hurricane.
  • Tropical Storm Ernesto
    -As of 01:00 UTC, TS Ernesto was located 35 km ENE of Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico.
    -Ernesto moving slowly westward along the Gulf Coast of the Mexican state of Campeche.
    -A Hurricane Watch is in effect for barra de nautla to Coatzacoalcos and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Celestun to barra de nautla along the Gulf Coast of Mexico.
