  • Deadly earthquake in Iran

    -Death toll has risen to 183. More than 1500 people injured.
    -Almost 16,000 people are given emergency shelter.
    -Ay least 45 killed in the city of Ahar and 500 of the injured.
    -60 villages sustained 50-70% damage, 6 villages 100% destroyed in Northwestern Iran. Earthquake caused more than 800 billion rials damage to rural places.

  • Wildfires in Canary Islands, Spain

    Trees burn in a fire in the Barco de Valdeorras region of Galicia in northwestern Spain; Source AP
    -More than 5000 evacuated from wildfires on Spanish Canary islands of Tenerife and La Gomera.
    -About 3000 hectares of land burned in La Gomera including about a tenth of the Garajonay nature reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
    -According to the agriculture ministry, wildfires have destroyed 130,830 hectares of vegetation in Spain Between January 1 and July 29.

  • Landslides in Tirol, Austria

    -Two killed by landslide in Hundstal near Inzing in Tirol, Austria.
    -According to local geologist Gunther Heibel the cause for the 70 metre wide landslide which covered the road in metres of land and rocks is thought to have been the moisture in the ground.
    -Around 150 guests who were at the local Inzinger Alm were rescued by firemen.

  • M 6.3 very strong shallow earthquake in Xinjiang-Xizang Border Region (@ 11 km depth) with epicenter located 282 km ESE of Hotan. Just a weak shaking will have felt by the people of Hotan.

  • M 4.1 light earthquake in Southern Italy (@ 28 km depth) with epicenter located 15 km E of Mattinata. Just a weak shaking will have felt by the people of Vieste, Monte Sant'Angelo and Manfredonia.

Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Botswana (Selinda), Brazil (River Tocantins), China (River Mekong, River Yangtze, River Xi Jiang and River Brahmaputra), Colombia (River Japura and River Magdelena), Democratic Republic of the Congo (River Lukaga), Guyana, Madagascar, Mexico, New Zealand and Sudan (River White Nile).
  • Flash floods in Manila, Philippines
    -Death toll from Manila floods climbs to 85. Among the casualties, 12 were killed in landslide, 62 died due to drowning, and the others died either by lightning, falling trees or electrocution.
    -More than 3 million people in 16 provinces were affected by the worst flood since 2009. Of the total number, 768,989 are still living in various concentration centers.
    -The total cost of damages to infrasturcture and agriculture was estimated at 604 million pesos (14.46 million U.S. dollars). Click for detail report on Manila floods.
  • Flash floods in Sudan, North Africa
    -Death toll from Sudan floods has risen to 32. Flood destroyed more than 4,700 homes.
    -Recent floods have affected at least 1,000 families in eastern Sudan and 14,000 people in the far-west region of Darfur.
  • Flash floods in Qinghai ,China
    -Four killed and one missing in flash floods in Qinghai province of China.
    -Moderate to heavy rains are expected to fall on parts of Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Yunnan, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei and Hunan provinces as well as Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

    -As of 01:00 UTC, TS Hector was located 405 km W of Manzanillo, Mexico and 305 km E of Socorro island.
    -Hector is moving toward the west-northwest near 13 mph.
  • Tropical Depression Helen
    -Tropical depression Helen is forecast to bring widespread rains over Bicol region of Philippines.
    -Helen is expected to be 590 kilometers east northeast of Tuguegarao, Cagayan by Monday evening.

    -At least seven houses damaged in possible tornadoes in Wilson county of North Carolina.
    -Storms caused heavy damage in Stantonsburg.

  • Massive cyclone in central Arctic ocean
    -A massive cyclone blew over the central Arctic Ocean this past week, north of the Beaufort Sea.
    -Cyclones are common at this time of year, but this week's storm was stronger than any other recorded.
    -Scientists believe the cyclone is causing Arctic sea ice to melt faster this year. About 600,000 square kilometres of sea ice was lost in the central Arctic in the last week.
