Recent World Disasters

• Massive Forest fire in Nepal
  -Forest fire reported in 28 different places of Nepal
  -It includes different areas of Shuklaphanta wildlife reserve, Chitwan national park, Parsa wildlife reserve, Kanchenjunga conservation area along with Dang laxmipur, Amlekhgunj, around Faplu aiport and Dahalkebar
  -Massive fire in forest of Lamabagar, Dolkha has approached close to upper Tamakoshi hydro power project. Two helicopters are sent to the affected area for rescue work
  -No one injured or killed
• Avalanche in Darwaz district of Afghanistan
  -Death toll has risen to 50 with 145 people still missing
  -Heavy snow predicted in Badakhshan with high risk of further avalanche
  -Rescue teams have so far been unable to reach the disaster-hit areas
  -A data shows that 15% of Afghanistan’s population is at high risk of being affected by flooding this spring

Recent Volcanic Activity

• Alaska/Cleveland recent volcanic activity
  -According to Alaska Volcano Observatory, another small, short duration explosion from Cleveland Volcano was detected on distant seismic stations and infrasound arrays on about 1:55 March 10, UTC (4:05 PM March 9, AKST.)
  -This explosion was similar to recent small events that occurred on March 7 on Cleveland and in December 2011. These events produced small ash clouds that dissipated quickly and did not affect air traffic
  -Ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level may develop
  -Cleveland volcano forms the western half of Chuginadak Island, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutians
  -There is no real-time seismic monitoring network on Mount Cleveland. Cleveland webcam is  located on top of High Hill a few miles North of the village of Nikolski on the western end of Umnak Island

Recent Flood Update

• Flooding in Australia (Daily update)
  -1000+ people evacuated from Darlington Point
  -People in North Wagga Wagga are allowed to return home

Active Cyclones

• Tropical cyclone Koji
  -Tropical cyclone koji, located approximately 930 nm south-southeast of Diego Garcia, has tracked southwestward at 10 knots over the past six hours
  -It is forecast to weaken to Tropical storm by late today

Other Disasters

• People in Japan today remembered the massive March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed over 19,000 people and unleashing the world's worst nuclear crisis. A minute of silence, prayers and anti-nuclear rallies was organized.
  Zhigang Peng, associate professor in Georgia Tech's School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, has converted that very earthquake's seismic waves into audio files
• Grass fire near Cleveland, state of Ohio burned about 12000 acres of land. However no one was hurt and no structures were damaged by this fire
