Recent World Disasters

• Heavy flooding and Landslide in Savusavu and Taveuni region of Fiji
  -6 people died with more than 1,000 evacuated
  -Heavy rainfall is still predicted to continue next 10 days, which will make the situation much worse
  -There will be a risk of flash flooding, rising rivers and more landslides in higher areas
  -$ 350,000 relief fund provided by New Zealand

• M 5.2 moderate shallow earthquake in Dodecanese Islands, Greece (@ 19 km depth) with epicenter located 87 km N of Iraklion, Crete, Greece. Moderate shaking of MMI V will have felt around epicenter area. It will have well felt by the people of  Iraklion, Nea Alikarnassos, Gazi region of Greece. It was even felt in Rethimnon, Akrotiri, Georgioupoli, Georgioupoli, Agios Nikolaos, Foinikas, Foinikas, Kolymvari, Agia Varvara region. Heraklion (Iraklion) is the largest city in Crete (and fifth in Greece). NO DAMAGE EXPECTED BUT CAN HAVE AFTERSHOCKS

  As sandra pokhai writes to "Disaster Report" using contact form from Heraklion, "we felt earthquake on thursday morning about 6-7 am greek time and again today friday 27 jan at 3.30 am greek time which was stronger than yesterday". Thanks` for the felt report, Sandra.
  EMSC Felt Reports
  Iraklion: it lasted for enough seconds ( i guess 20 sec),,, and after than less a minute i felt the bed trembling for 2-3 secIraklion: In the biggining the movement was week and later it got strong.
  Nea Alikarnassos: Moderately strong shake with to sound. It had a pretty long duration though, enough to wake us up and get alerted.
  
• M 4.5 moderate shallow(@ 22 km depth) earthquake in near the West Coast of Colombia with epicenter located 19 km SW Nuquí. It will have felt by the people of Quibdó too

• M 5.4 strong very shallow harmless sea quake in Scotia Sea (@ 12 km depth) with  epicenter located 314 km W of Coronation Island, South Orkney Islands. It will have just faintly felt in coastal region

• M 4.4 moderate earthquake in Guatemala with epicenter located 21 km WSW of Escuintla, Guatemala (@ 78 km depth). Weak shaking will have felt in Cotzumalguapa and Escuintla region

• M 3.4 shallow earthquake in Northern California (Johnston Corner, California, @ 12 km depth) with epicenter located just 7 km ENE from Watsonville, CA. It will have well felt by the people of Watsonville, Gilroy, Aptos, Freedom, San Juan Bautista, Pajaro Aromas and Hollister region. The Pajaro Valley, where Watsonville is located, has a climate that is usually pleasant — around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year

Recent Volcanic Activity

• Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report (New Activity/Unrest)
  • Ecuador/Sangay Recent Volcanic Activity: Based on information from pilots and the Guayaquil MWO, an ash plume from Sangay was reported drifting S and SE on 23 January. Ash was not detected in partly-cloudy satellite imagery. On 24 January a hotspot was visible on satellite imagery
  • Ecuador/Tungurahua Recent Volcanic Activity: IG reported that during 17-22 January low-level seismic activity was detected at Tungurahua and cloud cover mostly prevented observations. On 17 and 20 January steam plumes rose 500 m above the crater. Muddy water in the Achupashal and Pirámide drainages on the NW flanks was noted on 20 January, and a lahar traveled down the Pampas drainage on 21 January. Seismic activity slightly increased during 23-24 January
  • Costa Rica/Turrialba Recent Volcanic Activity: OVSICORI-UNA reported that on 12 January a new vent opened on the SE flank of the W crater of Turrialba and ash emissions drifted NNE; ashfall was reported in Tres Ríos (27 km SW). During the evening of 18 January scientists observed gas emissions and ejection of tephra from the vent. They also observed reddish flames from combusting gas, estimated to be about 700 degrees Celsius. Residents reported a dark ash cloud and ashfall in La Central (4 km SW). An OVSICORI-UNA pilot observed an ash plume that rose to altitudes of 4.3-6.1 km (14,000-20,000 ft) a.s.l. on 18 January

• Tornadoes in Texas along with heavy rainfall and storm damaged homes in Austin, San Antonio and Houston area BUT none get injured.
