Tropical storm Washi (mm rainfall); Source NASA

Recent Disasters

• Deadliest Tropical Storm Washi in Mindanao, Philippines (UPDATED 12/21/2011)
  -1002 died with 49 still missing and more than 45000 evacuated due to Storm Washi. More than 44,000 people lost their homes
  -Tropical Storm "Washi" will reach Malaysia today (Dec 21)
  -Now, Washi may cause minor impacts to Thailand (mainly Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Trang) BUT poses NO THREAT Detail update on this disaster can be found on "Deadliest Tropical Storm Washi In Mindanao, Philippines"
• EF-1 Tornado In Dequincy (State of Louisiana), USA
  -Tornado, three quarters of a mile long, confirmed by National Weather Service
  -Some damage reported due to high winds in the area including damage to DeQuincy Memorial Hospital (evacuated)
  -EF-1 Tornadoes typically have wind speeds of 86 to 110 miles per hour
  -last year around the same time deadly twisters hit Arkansas, Illinois and Missouri
• Flash Flood in Batticaloa District of Sri Lanka
  -Seven DS divisions, Vavu'na-theevu, Chengkaladi, Ma'nmunaip-pattu, Koa'raip-pattu, Koa'raip-pattu West, Kaaththaankudi and Ma'nmunaip-pattu North in Batticaloa district are badly affected with this disaster
  -More rainfall is predicted in coming days by Meteorological Department in Batticaloa

• M 4.3 deep earthquake in Potosi, Bolivia with epicenter 81 km WSW of Tupiza, Bolivia (@ 208.6 km depth). It will be faintly felt.

• M 4.6 moderate shallow earthquake in Eastern Turkey with epicenter 31 km NW of Populated area Van (pop 371,713). It is the same area where earlier very deadly Turkey earthquake took 605+ lives. The epicenter is 36 km S Ercis (pop 91,915), Turkey close to Lake Van (@ 7 km depth). It will be well felt above the epicenter and will be experience as a weak shaking in 50+ km radius.

• M 2.5 shallow earthquake recorded today in Los Angeles Area, California (Mar Vista) with epicenter just below Marina del Rey, California (@ 9.4 km depth). It will well felt by the people of Culver City, Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California. People of Los Angeles were active to find out the epicenter immediately after the quake. Jack Northrop Fld Hawthorne Muni Airport of Los Angeles is just 7 km far from epicenter.

• M 5.5 moderate Sea quake South Of Kermadec Island very far from Horoera, Woodville County. It will not be even felt. NO TSUNAMI ALERT

• M 5.1 moderate harmless Sea quake in Volcano Island, Japan with epicenter 290 km far from Higashi, Tokyo-to. It will not be even felt.

• M 4.8 shallow harmless Sea quake in Santo Tomas, Provincia de Galapagos, Ecuador. The epicenter is 1276 km WNW of Puerto Villamil, Isabela, Galapagos. It will not be even felt.

• M 4.7 moderate earthquake in Eastern Honshu, Japan with epicenter below Shirahama, Iwate-ken. The epicenter is 16 km NW Miyako (pop 51,721) and 73 km E of Morioka, Honshu, Japan. It will be well felt in different parts of Iwate, Miyagi region. JMA mentions M 4.6 @ 50 km depth in Iwate-ken Oki region. Max. JMA intensity 3

  UPDATE
  M 4.1 earthquake stuck after four hours in Saitama-ken Nambu region of Japan @ 120 km depth. It will be faintly felt in Yamanash, Kanagawa and some parts of Capital Tokyo too.
• M 2.7 Very shallow minor earthquake in Arkansas with epicenter just below Quitman. It will be faintly felt in Guy, Damascus and Greenbrier region of Arkansas

  -Death Toll has risen to 75
  -Schools in Ghaziabad and parts of Bihar are closed
  -People of Various States of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab and Haryana  are affected
  
• Cold wave in Siraha, Nepal
  -Three died due to extreme cold in Siraha, Terai Nepal
  -One is reported to be died again in Mohattari, Nepal. Yesterday nine were reported to be died in Mohattari due to cold.
  -All of them are of 50+ age
• Heavy Hailstorm in Ladysmith region of South Africa
  -10 cm thick hail accumulated
  -Caused damage to several vehicles.
