Recent Disaster Report

• Heavy Flooding In New Zealand: State Of Emergency Declared In Nelson-Tasman Region (UPDATED 12/16/2011)
  -More than 200 homes have been damaged.In Pohara alone up to 30 homes are reported to be damaged by flood.
  -There are about 160 evacuated homes in Nelson, 30 in Pohara and about five in Richmond.
  -The repair bill due to Flooding and slips caused by torrential rain in Nelson and the Tasman region is expected to be at least $500,000.
  -Many of the people evacuated have stayed at motels or with family and friends
  -Up to 300 telephone lines are still out in the Britannia Heights area-Thunder, showers and strong winds are expected to keep hitting the North Island today.

• Medium risk warning for snow falls in parts of Wales
  -The Met Office has issued a medium risk warning  today for snow fall in Brecon Beacons, Wales area.
  -Snow fall is also reported across Wales in Pontypridd and Aberystwyth as well as Dolgellau and Anglesey.
  -Environment Agency Wales has issued a warning of the risk of localised surface water flooding later in south Wales.
• Thunderstorm "Joachim" in Bernese Jura (Canton of Bern) city of Switzerland
  -Company operating boat services on Lake Geneva between the Swiss and French shores has cancelled all services due to thunderstorm "Joachim"-Several roads have been closed off due to fallen trees in Chasseral
  -Warning of heightened avalanche risk throughout the weekend is issued
  -Snow levels is expected to reach between 70 and 80 centimeters above 2,000 meters.

• M 3.8 shallow earthquake in Eastern Turkey with epicenter 25 km far from Tercan (pop 12,235), Turkey (@ 4 km depth). It will be faintly felt in Erzurum (pop 420,691) region of Turkey too.

• M 4.8 moderate shallow earthquake in Oaxaca, Mexico with epicenter just below Corralero, Estado de Oaxaca (@ 18.7 km depth). The populated area is very far from epicenter. It will be lightly felt as far as Oaxaca city, Mexico.

• M 5.2 moderate Sea quake in Aisen, Chile very far from Puerto Aguirre, Region Aisen del General Carlos Ibanez del Campo. It is hard to be felt.

  UPDATE
  M 5.5 strong shallow Sea quake stuck the same region of Aisen, Chile after 50 minutes (@ 10 km depth). About 2000 people will experience light shaking. The populated area of Coihaique, Aisen, Chile is 327 km far from epicenter. It will be faintly felt in coastal area.
• M 4.8 moderate Sea quake in Honshu, Japan with epicenter in Miyagi-ken Oki region. It will be faintly felt in Iwate and Miyagi region. Max. JMA intensity 1

  UPDATE
  M 4.8 another moderate  earthquake recorded after 45 minutes in Honshu, Japan with epicenter close to Utsunomiya, Honshu, Japan. It is 38 km W of Mito, Honshu, Japan. It will be well felt above epicenter and lightly as far as Capital Tokyo.
  JMA mentions M 4.3 (@ 70 km depth) in Tochigi-ken Nambu region. Max. JMA intensity 3 in Ibaraki (Chikusei-shi Funyu, Chikusei-shi Kadoi) and Tochigi (Takanezawa-machi Ishizue)
• M 4.0 very shallow moderate earthquake in Kyrgyzstan close to Kochkorka Kyrgyzstan (@ 1 km depth). It will be well felt around Kongorchok, Arsy, Shamsy, Balikci area which are less populated. The populated area of Biskek (pop 896,259), Kyrgyzstan is 115 far from epicenter.

• M 4.4 moderate Sea quake in Bio Bio, Chile with epicenter located 49 km W of Concepcion, Bio-Bio, Chile. It will be faintly felt.

• M 3.7 earthquake in Island of Hawaii, Hawaii with epicenter close to Volcano, Hawaii. People of Volcano, Naalehu, Captain Cook, Hakalau, Honokaa, Waikoloa, Kailua Kona, Kamuela, Pahala, Papaikou, Pepeekeo, Hawaii can also feel it well.

Recent Volcanic Eruptions

• Increased seismicity in Ijen Volcano, Indonesia
  -Due to increase seismicity alert status at Ijen volcano is raised to level 2 (out of a maximum 4)
  -A 1 km exclusion zone has been placed around the crater
• Kilauea volcano, Hawaii: Lava being pouring into the Pacific Ocean
  -The lava is continuously pouring from Hawaii volcano into the pacific ocean from the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō vent
  -A lava delta is being formed at the base of a sea cliff at West Ka‘ili‘ili

• Flash flood in Southern Philippines
  -3 people are reported to be killed by flood in Southern Philippines
  -They are reported to drowned in nearby river.
  -Tropical Storm Washi made landfall at 2:30 p.m. (06:30 GMT) Friday in Davao Oriental province's Banganga township, about 625 miles (1,000 kilometres) southeast of Manila.

Recent Cyclones

• Tropical Storm WASHI (27W)  with wind speed 83km/hr is active in Pacific Ocean. Tropical Storm Washi made landfall at 2:30 p.m. (06:30 GMT) Friday in Davao Oriental province's Banganga township, about 625 miles (1,000 kilometres) southeast of Manila.

Other Disasters

• 155 died due to toxic liquor In Eastern India (UPDATED 12/16/2011)
  -The death toll due to consumption of toxic home brewed alcohol has risen to 155.
  -The victims are from 10 villages in an area near West Bengal's border with Bangladesh
  -Recent reports shows mixing of methanol in at least 20 victims
• Extreme cold in Terai region of Nepal
  -Two people are reported to be dead due to extreme cold in Rautahat which is Terai region of Nepal
  -Schools in Rautahat, Nepal are closed for one week due to extreme cold.
  
• Wildfire in Volpajola region (Corsica) of France
  -300 hectares of land near the village of Volpajola is reported to be destroyed.
  -No report of any house being affected.
