Landslide in West Pokot, Kenya kills 24

November 23, 2019: Landslides caused by severe weather have claimed lives of at least 24 people in in West Pokot county, Kenya. Seven children died in the landslide disaster and severely affected Nyarkulian and Parua villages of Kenya. According to the Kenya Red Cross, in Mikinduri, Meru County, a number  of houses have been reportedly swept away after river Thanantu broke it's banks.

Lightning in Goromonzi, Zimbabwe kills three school children

November 21, 2019: Lightning in Goromonzi, Mashonaland East region of Zimbabwe has claimed lives of three school children.  The lightning struck the children of the three Early Childhood Development (ECD) from Rusike Primary School at the time of returning back from school. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe's Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a flood warning for the country's southern provinces for Wednesday. According to MSD, parts of Manicaland, Matabeleland South, Masvingo Provinces, as well as southern areas of Midlands Province, are forecast to receive heavier rains in excess of 50 mm in 24 hours. According to the Meteorological Department, lightning strikes normally kill up to 100 people each year, mostly rural children. Zimbabwe is even cited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the country where a single bolt of lightning claimed its largest number of victims. Magnitude 5.7 earthquake in Bajhang rattles Nepal and India

November 19, 2019: Magnitude 5.7 strong earthquake has been recorded in Bajhang district of Nepal at 07:15 pm local time. According to the Nepal Seismological Center, the earthquake's epicenter was located in Pauwagadhi area of Khaptad National park. However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported magnitude 5.3 with epicenter 21 km far from Dipayal region of Far Western Nepal. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km. Light to weak tremor of MMI III-IV was felt across state 5 of Nepal. It was well felt in Kailali, Kalikot, Darchula, Dailekh, Bajura, Achham and Nepalgunj area.  People rushed out of their houses in fear as the tremors continued for over 3 seconds. The tremor was also felt in Lucknow and Delhi NCR region of India . Last week, tremor was also felt in Far Western Nepal after magnitude 4.5 earthquake with epicenter in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India . 

Was there an earthquake in Ukiah, California today?

November 19, 2019: Yes, tremor from an earthquake of magnitude 3.2 has been reported in Ukiah, CA today at 8:03 p.m. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located 2 km NW of Talmage, California and 2.3 km E of Ukiah, CA. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 1 km.  People of Ukiah felt light shaking with MMI IV. Also the weak tremor was felt in Redwood Valley. No preliminary damage or injured have been reported.

Flooding in Venice, Italy kills 2 — State of emergency declared

November 15, 2019: The Italian government has declared a state of emergency in Venice after recent flooding claimed lives of two people. Two people died in the small island of Pellestrina.  Italian Government has allocated 20 million euros to the city and the surrounding areas affected by the flooding to support the first post-emergency intervention.

Cyclone Bulbul kills 32 in India and Bangladesh

November 14, 2015:  Cyclone Bulbul has left a trail of death and destruction, claiming lives of at least 32 people in India and Bangladesh. Cyclone Bulbul killed 10 people and affected at least 2.73 lakh families in different parts of the West Bengal, India causing the suspension of operation for 12 hours at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. According to the Sate Disaster Management, at least 2,473 houses were destroyed and another 26,000 were partially damaged in the cyclone in the coastal districts along the Bay of Bengal. At least 22 people died in seven coastal districts of Bangladesh. Cyclone Bulbul made landfall between Sagar Islands of West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh. More than 1.8 million people in the vulnerable Bangladeshi coastal districts were evacuated to 4,071 cyclone shelters.
