Recent Natural Disasters
  • Wildfires in New Mexico
    -Several wildfires reported in southwest New Mexico.
    -Forest fire in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah led the evacuation of many people.
    -Twelve houses burned Wednesday in Willow Creek subdivision, which is near Gila National Forest in southwest New Mexico.
    -High winds are expected on Friday and Saturday which will cause more difficulty in controlling the fire.
  • Heavy rainstorms in Guangxi Zhuang, China
    -Heavy rainfall caused disruption of railway traffic and drinking water supplies in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region of China.
    -Rainstorms have destroyed houses, cut off road traffic, inundated crops, cut off drinking water supplies and damaged power, telecommunications and irrigation facilities in Baise's Lingyun County.

  • M 3.2 weak shallow earthquake in France (@ 5 km depth) with epicenter located 3 km SW Saint-andré. Weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Grenoble and Briançon.

  • M 4.2 light shallow aftershocks in Northern Italy (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located
    2 km NE Mirandola. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Modena, Bologna, Parma and Verona. At least 7 killed in earlier Bologna-Verona Italy Earthquake.

  • M 2.8 minor very shallow earthquake in Bulgaria (@ 2 km depth) today with epicenter located 6 km NW Batanovci. Light to weak shaking will have felt by the people of Pernik and Sofia. 50 injured in earlier M 5.8 earthquake in Pernik-Sofia, Bulgaria.

  • M 4.7 moderate very shallow earthquake in South Island of New Zealand (@ 9 km depth) with epicenter located 24 km ENE of Christchurch. Modearate shaking will have felt by the people of KaiapoiTe puru-thornton bay and Christchurch.

    Update
    -The downtown part of the city closed. Hundreds of construction workers evacuated immediately after the quake as a precaution.
    -No damage or injury reported.

    -Mexico's famed Popocatepetl volcano continues to spew ash and gas onto nearby towns and villages.
  • Crystals can help predict volcano eruptions, scientists say
    Scientists dissecting the remains of the disastrous 1980 explosion of Mt. St. Helens in Washington state say that crystal formations trapped in volcanic rocks hold important clues about when a magma-loaded mountain is about to blow — a discovery that could help volcanologists make more accurate predictions about future eruptions.

Flooding List
  • Flooding in North Sumatra
    -Heavy rainfall caused flooding in three sub districts in Langkat district, North Sumatra province.
    -Tenang river in Batang Serangan overflwoed. Nearby Sei Bambang village affected by the flood water.
    -Floodwater also affected Paluh Manis, Pasiran, Pekan Gebang and Pasar Rawa villages.

Tropical Cyclone List
  • Hurricane Bud in Mexico
    -Tropicals Storm Bud has strengthens into category three hurricane.
    -School in low-lying communities cancelled. Emergency shelters being prepared.
    -A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the coast of Mexico from Manzanillo northwestward to Cabo Corrientes and the coast of Mexico from Punta San Telmo westward to east of Manzanillo. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the coast of Mexico from Punta San Telmo westward to east of Manzanillo and the coast of Mexico north of Cabo Corrientes to San Blas.
    -Bud is located 270 km SW of Manzanillo Mexico. Click for real time update for hurricane bud

Natural Disaster News
  • Landslide in Bogor, Indonesia-Eight killed in a landslide in Jasinga sub-district, Bogor district, West Java.
    -They all were the workers of an illegal gold mine.
  • 4 to 8 Atlantic hurricanes predicted in 2012
    -NOAA expects nine to 15 tropical storms and four to eight of those strengthening into hurricanes in 2012.
    -One to three of those are predicted to grow into major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale.
    -Hurricane season for the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico officially runs from June 1 to November 30.
