Indonesian landslide kills 4, leaves more than 30 missing

April 6, 2017: At least four people have been confirmed dead and more than 30 others have been missing after a landslide struck Indonesia's Java island. According to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, the landslide stretched 1.5 kilometers long which engulfed farmers harvesting ginger in Banaran village in East Java province's Ponorogo district.

Colombia Mudslide: 254 dead, 400 injured in Mocoa

April 3, 2017: Flash flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the city of Mocoa, Putumayo, Colombia have claimed lives of at least 254 people and injured more than 400 people. President Juan Manuel Santos has declared a state of emergency in the region. More than 1,000 emergency personnel, including soldiers and local police have been deployed to help the rescue efforts.

Two dead as Cyclone Debbie sweeps along Australia’s east coast

March 31, 2017: Two people have been confirmed dead in flooding as Cyclone Debbie swept along Australia’s east coast, causing six large rivers to reach major flood levels. A woman died due to flooding in Burringbar, south of Murwillumbah in NSW. The body of a second woman was found in a river in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Avalanche in Japan kills 8, injures 40 others

March 28, 2017: An avalanche in ski slopes in Japan has claimed lives of at least seven high school students and a teacher. The avalanche occurred early on Monday near Nasu in Tochigi prefecture, 120km (75 miles) north of Tokyo.

Cyclone Debbie prompts 100 school closures in Australia

March 26, 2017: The Department of Education has shut at least 139 schools and early childhood education and care service in preparation for Cyclone Debbie. Around 74 public schools have been closed in preparation for Cyclone Debbie. Also, 26 catholic and independent school have been shut down. Apart from that, 39 early childhood education and care service have been also closed.
