Tropical Cyclone 16 likely to form in the Gulf of Mexico

October 18, 2019: Potential Tropical Cyclone 16 is likely to form in the Gulf of Mexico late Thursday or early Friday bringing heavy rainfall and coastal flooding, the National Hurricane Center said. Tropical Cyclone 16 is currently over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. However, the tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for parts of the Gulf Coast, The Weather Channel reported. A tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of the northern Gulf Coast from the Mississippi/Alabama border to the Ochlockonee River, Florida, and from Grand Isle, Louisiana, to the mouth of the Pearl River. Similarly, a tropical storm watch is in effect for east of the Ochlockonee River to Yankeetown, Florida. If tropical cyclone 16 becomes a tropical/subtropical storm, it would be called Nestor. Tropical Storm Barry expected to be Hurricane, poses threat to Gulf Coast of the United States

July 12, 2019: Tropical Storm Barry is expected to become hurricane by landfall on Saturday with dangerous storm surge, heavy rains and wind conditions across the north-central gulf coast. According to the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center, a hurricane warning is in effect for Intracoastal city to Grand Isle. Similarly, a tropical storm warning is in effect for mouth of the Pearl river to Grand Isle, Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas including metropolitan New Orleans and Intracoastal City to Cameron As of 4:00 P.M. CDT July 12 (21:00 UTC), Tropical Storm Barry was moving toward the west-northwest near 6 mph (9 km/h). May 13, 2019: There is a rumor spread about another severe tropical cyclone in Odisha in June 2019.  The message has been widely spreading across social medias. People in Odisha are warned of another severe cyclone after Fani . We would like to suggest to check the India Meteorological Department Website instead of running behind the rumors. If there are any storm or cyclone details, the website will provide the necessary information. People are panicked after the recent cyclone Fani slammed Odisha causing deaths of 64 as of today. Atleast 39 people died in Puri district alone.

Bhutan issues warning on Cyclone Fani

May 2, 2019: According to an advisory issued by National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology, Royal Government of Bhutan on May 2, 2019, Bhutan is very likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the southern, eastern and isolated places of central parts of the country due to Cyclone Fani. The rest of the country is likely to receive moderate to heavy rain from 3rd May to 5th May.  Gusty wind is also very likely over the country during this period. Following the cyclone projected path, Bhutan will most likely not feel the direct impact of cyclone Fani. It indicated low pressure towards Bhutan. Bhutan is expected to have the peripheral effect of the cyclone due to the large size of the cyclonic system. Cyclone Fani has became an "extremely severe cyclonic" storm wind speeds up to 200 kmph keeping Coastal Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh region of India on high alert.

May 1, 2019: Cyclone Fani (pronounced as Foni) has became an "extremely severe cyclonic" storm wind speeds up to 200 kmph keeping Coastal Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are on high alert.  Severe Cyclonic Storm Fani is currently located 680km SSW of Puri and will cross the Odisha coast between Gopalpur an Chandbali close to Puri. According to the press release issued by India Meteorological Department , cyclonic storm Fani will bring light to moderate rainfall at few places very likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh & south coastal Odisha on 2nd May.  The sea conditions are very likely to be rough to very rough along & off Puducherry, Tamilnadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked his officials and the National Crisis Management Committee to stay in touch with the states at risk from Cyclone Fani, NDTV reported.

Orange Alert issued for Tropical Cyclone Joaninha in Mauritius

March 25, 2019: Tropical Cyclone Joaninha is currently located approximately 314 NM E-NE of Port Louis, Mauritius,  The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reports. Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System has issued an Orange Alert for Tropical Cyclone Joaninha-19 in Mauritius. Tropical Cyclone Joaninha-19 can have a medium humanitarian impact based on the maximum sustained wind speed, exposed population and vulnerability.

BOM: Severe Tropical Cyclone Veronica reaches category four severity

Severe Tropical Cyclone Veronica Forecast Track Map (BOM) March 21, 2019: Severe Tropical Cyclone Veronica has reached a category four severity with major impact for the Pilbara coast likely over the weekend. According to Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), Australia , at 8:00 pm AWST, Tropical Cyclone Veronica was located within 35 kilometres of 17.3 degrees South, 117.3 degrees East , 360 kilometres north northwest of Port Hedland and 385 kilometres north of Karratha. Severe Tropical Cyclone Veronica, a Category 4 system, is moving slowly towards the Pilbara coast. The cyclone should continue its south to southwest track tonight and Friday before taking a more south southeast track on Saturday. Whilst it is possible that the cyclone may weaken before reaching the Pilbara coast, a severe coastal impact is likely, BOM reported. BOM: Tropical Cyclone Trevor prompts emergency in Gulf of Carpentaria

Tropical Cyclone Trevor Forecast Track Map (BOM) March 21, 2019: Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia ahead of the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Trevor. According to Bureau of Meteorology, Australia (BOM), Tropical Cyclone Trevor is located in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to rapidly intensify to a Category 3 system as it moves towards the NT. In the west, Cyclone Veronica is now Cat 4 & tracking towards the Pilbara coast.  Tropical Cyclone Trevor will continue to intensify off the western Peninsula coast as it moves southwest. A severe impact on the southwestern Gulf of Carpentaria coast is likely over the weekend. Mozambique: Cyclone Idai kills 10, affects 62,975 people

March 12, 2019: Flooding caused by tropical cyclone Idai has claimed lives of 10 people and affected around 62,975 people in Mozambique. Cyclone Idai has currently intensified to that of a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific oceans. At its peak intensity, Idai's strength may be equal to a super typhoon or a strong Category 4 or even a Category 5 hurricane,  AccuWeather reported. According to AccuWeather , Idai is now expected to strike central Mozambique on Friday. "At least 120,000 people are at risk of flooding and heavy rains in the coming days," the UN said. Following the current projection, residents of Beira, Chiloane, Nova Sofala and Chinde will be at high risk from the cyclone Idai. The precursor of Idai affected Malawi and Mozambique. Tropical Cyclone Pola upgraded to category 3, bringing severe weather to Fiji and Tonga

February 27, 2019: Tropical Cyclone Pola has been upgraded to a severe category 3 system as it continues to move south southwest between Tonga and Fiji. Tropical Cyclone Pola is currently a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone, based on the Fiji tropical scale, with winds equal to a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean. Vanuatu: Tropical Cyclone Oma strengthens to a category 3

Traditionally-built homes in Vanuatu have been receiving the brunt of Cyclone Oma (IFRC Asia Pacific/Twitter) February 17, 2019: The Fiji Meteorological Service has upgraded Tropical Cyclone Oma to a category 3. According to the Radio New Zealand, the tropical cyclone Oma lashed the northern islands of the Vanuatu over the past 24 hours, reportedly bringing down trees and houses in the area. The Vanuatu Red Cross has reported that the houses and trees have been brought down by Cyclone Oma in the north of the country. Cyclone Mekunu kills 13 in Oman and Yemen

May 29, 2018: Severe cyclone Mekunu has claimed lives of at least 13 people in Oman and Yemen, including seven on Socotra, and six in Oman. Mekunu made landfall on the Omani coast near the city of Salalah at peak intensity.  Cyclonic Storm Mekunu was the most intense tropical cyclone to make landfall over the Arabian Peninsula on record.

IMD issues advisory to Maharashtra over Cyclone Sagar

May 19, 2018: The India Meteorological Department has issued advisory to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Lakshadweep over Cyclone Sagar. The cyclonic storm Sagar lay centred over the Gulf of Aden, about 390 km east-northeast of Yemen's Aden city and 560 km west-northwest of Socotra Islands. According to the Advisory, the cyclone Sagar is very likely to intensify further slightly during the next 12 hours and continue to move westwards for some more time and then move west-southwestwards thereafter. The northern part of Sagar brought heavy rain and some minor flooding to coastal towns of Yemen. Sagar brought heavy rainfall to coastal areas in Yemen's Hadramawt and Mahra provinces and Socotra Island. Cyclone Sagar expected to make a landfall by today evening over Somalia coast.

Mexico: Tropical Storm Beatriz kills 3 in Oaxaca

June 2, 2017: Heavy rainfall and landslides caused by tropical storm Beatriz claimed lives of three people in parts of Oaxaca, Mexico. According to the Mexico News Daily , landslide damage has been reported at 16 places on state highways, including Huajuapan-Juxtlahuaca, Teotitlán-Cuicatlán, Oaxaca-Tehuantepec, and in various locations on the coast highway, No. 200.

Cyclone Mora kills 203 in Sri Lanka, leaves 96 others missing

Flooding in Sri Lanka (Xinhua News Agency) June 2, 2017: Cyclone mora caused massive flooding and landslides throughout Sri Lanka claiming lives of atleast 203 people and left 96 others missing. According to the Disaster Management Centre, more than 400,000 people have been affected by the severe rains and strong winds that started on 24 May, 2017. The recent flooding is the worst to hit the island since May 2003, when 250 people were killed and 10,000 homes destroyed. More than 600,000 people are currently temporarily homeless after the landslides and floods hit Sri Lanka.

Cyclone Mora kills 9 in Bangladesh

May 30, 2017: At least nine people died and thousands of houses were destroyed as severe cyclonic storm mora hit the southwest districts of Bangladesh. Cyclone mora made landfall in the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar coastline with gusty wind at the speed of 146kmph, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Cyclone Donna forms NE of Vanuatu, poses no threat to Fiji

May 3, 2017: Pacific forecasters have named a Category 1 cyclone as Donna which formed this evening northeast of Vanuatu, Donna. Fiji Meteorological Service senior forecaster Stephen Meke said the system was forecast to move over Vanuatu within the next two days.

Two dead as Cyclone Debbie sweeps along Australia’s east coast

March 31, 2017: Two people have been confirmed dead in flooding as Cyclone Debbie swept along Australia’s east coast, causing six large rivers to reach major flood levels. A woman died due to flooding in Burringbar, south of Murwillumbah in NSW. The body of a second woman was found in a river in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Cyclone Debbie prompts 100 school closures in Australia

March 26, 2017: The Department of Education has shut at least 139 schools and early childhood education and care service in preparation for Cyclone Debbie. Around 74 public schools have been closed in preparation for Cyclone Debbie. Also, 26 catholic and independent school have been shut down. Apart from that, 39 early childhood education and care service have been also closed.

18 dead as Cyclone Vardah lashes Tamil Nadu, India

Update December 14, 2016 At least eighteen people have been killed in six districts of Tamil Nadu in rain-related incidents linked to Cyclone Vardah. Five each died in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts. Four persons died in Kancheepuram district, one each in Villupuram and Nagapattinam districts and two in Tiruvannamali district.
