Volcanic eruption on La Palma in Spanish Canary Islands destroys 100 houses

September 22, 2021: A volcano eruption on La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands has destroyed around 100 houses and forced the evacuation of about 5,500 residents. The authorities are closely monitoring fires that may start from the burning lava of Cumbre Vieja volcano. Evacuation orders have been issued for El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. According to Copernicus Emergency Management Service, the lava from the volcano has spread over 154 hectares in the towns of El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez flew to La Palma to oversee rescue efforts.

Low pressure triggers flooding in Castellon de la Plana, Spain

April 2, 2020: An area of low pressure has triggered torrential rainfall leading to floods in parts of eastern Spain. Floodwaters have affected Castellon de la Plana, the capital of Castellon province. According to media reports, at least 91 people have been rescued in Almassora, Borriana and Oropesa.  Further, severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds have been predicted for the Balearic Islands.

Storm Gloria in Spain kills 9, leaves four missing

January 23, 2020: Storm Gloria has claimed lives of nine people and left four other missing in Spain. More than 200,000 people are without power and weather alerts have been activated in around 33 provinces. The Spanish meteorological agency has placed 33 of its 55 provinces on high alert. Teruel Albacete, Murcia, Barcelona, Tarragon, Girona, Castellon, and Alicante province have been kept on red alert. The storm is now moving across the Pyrenees, bringing heavy snow to the mountains. Forecasters had predicted the storm would ease by Wednesday.

Storm Gloria kills 4 in Spain — 33 province on high alert

January 21, 2020: The powerful storm Gloria caused strong winds and heavy snowfall in Spain claiming lives of four people. Fatalities have been reported in Asturias, Gandia, Avila and Moixent. The Spanish meteorological agency has placed 33 of its 55 provinces on high alert. Teruel Albacete, Murcia, Barcelona, Tarragon, Girona, Castellon, and Alicante province have been kept on red alert. Heavy flooding and strong storm severely affected Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Storm Gloria has has now reached Pyrénées-Orientales, southernmost Mediterranean department of France.

Fash floods in Tenerife, Spain kill 5

February 16, 2019: Flash floods caused by an intense storm claimed lives of five people on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife . According to Pilar Merino Tromboso, the Interior Ministry representative in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 224 liters (59 gallons) per square meter of rain fell on the city in four hours Sunday.

Two killed as worst floods in 30 years wreak havoc in Spain

Flash floods have caused chaos across southern Spain (Getty/Express.co.uk) December 6, 2016: Severe rainfall caused the worst flooding in Spain in nearly 30 years prompting the  meteorological service to issue a 'red alert', the highest level of warning for extreme risk. Recent floods have claimed the lives of at least two people and killed around 200 animals in Malaga.

Flash flood in Tenerife, Spain kills 5

Flash flood on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife has claimed lives of five people. The Red Cross has deployed 120 volunteers, 10 ambulances and off-board boats to help in the rescue operation.

Snow storm in Eastern Spain kills two female hikers

Strong winds and snow storms across Spain have claimed lives of atleast two female hikers. The two women were found late Sunday in the Tinenca de Benifassa mountain area. The two women along with a man had gone missing on Saturday. A search helicopter rescued the  man.

Severe flood in Spain kills four elderly residents, injures 5

Severe flooding in Spain has claimed lives at least four people. Four elderly residents died near Sio River in the town of Agramunt. Nine residents on the ground floor of the retirement home were caught in the sudden flooding, the Associated Press reported. Five people managed to escape.

Storms batter Spain, two children seriously injured, one missing

Strong storms and high tides swept Spain on Saturday, seriously injuring two children and leaving at least one person missing. Winds of at least 110 km/hr hit the country leaving two children injured in Murcia, Think Spain reported. They are having treatment at the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in Murcia city.   A fisherman has been missing from the coast of Balieiros beach in Ribeira. Coastguard rescuers are searching the missing person. More than 500 lightning strikes have been recorded in Galicia.  Around 96 calls were received by Emergency services in just two hours in Madrid. Wild weather in Canary Islands claim 2 lives

Wild weather in Canary Islands of Spain has claimed lives of at least two people, the regional government said today. Two people including an 11-year-old girl were drowned in the Canary Islands when they were swept away by waves on La Graciosa Island. Two other memebers of the same family were rescued by boats. Valencia's opera house has also been damaged and remain closed indefinitely. Strong (volcanic?) earthquake at El Hierro, Canary Islands, Spain

M 5.4 strong earthquake shakes El Hierro, Canary Islands, Spain, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 31 km NW of Frontera. It was 14.2 miles deep. Earthquake has occurred relatively far out in the ocean to the west of El Hierro. Several rockfalls have been reported. The Mayor of Frontera has ordered and confirmed the closure of the road from Los Llanillos to Sabinosa. Spain wildfire out of control, 130 evacuated

About 130 residents have been evacuated after wildfire in Spain raged out of control. Fire is burning near Valdepenas de la Sierra, some 80 kilometers northeast of Madrid. Nearly 350 emergency workers with 21 aircraft and 43 ground vehicles are struggling to control the Spain wildfire. Forest fire last week on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca burned 2,335 hectares. Spanish Mallorca forest fire: Worst fire in 15 years evacuates 700

About 700 people have been evacuated due to forest fire in Mallorca, Spain. Mallorca fire has burned around 1,800 hectares, most of them of either pine forest or low-lying woodland, Xinhua reported quoting government official of the Balearic islands. Mallorca forest fire has affected Es Grau, Ses Tanquetes and Estellenc. About 370 firefighter, civil defense members and the military emergency unit are struggling to control the fire with the help of 24 planes and helicopters. M 3.3 quake hits San Fulgencio, Spain

M 3.3 weak earthquake hits San Fulgencio, Spain today, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported. According to the EMSC, the quake's epicenter was located 3 km NE of Formentera de Segura. It was 10 km deep. Earthquake occured in Torrevieja area (San Fulgencio) of Spain. This is the second weak earthquake today in the San Fulgencio region. El Hierro Volcano in Canary Islands showing 'extreme seismicity'

'Extreme seismicity' has started in El Hierro volcano in Canary Islands. A 4.6 magnitude earthquake has been recorded recently in Canary Islands of Spain. The earthquake which struck at 15:07 GMT had its epicenter located 113 km far from El Pinar. This is so far the strongest earthquake in 2013 close to El Hierro volcano in Canary Islands . Luckily the earthquake's epicenter was out in the sea! Around 230 earthquakes have been recorded west of Frontera, IHI from yesterday (March 27) till now (08:00 GMT). Most of the earthquakes are less than magnitude 3.0 Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) had earlier predicted 23% chance of magnitude 4.6 earthquake near El Hierro volcano in the Canary Island .
