Magnitude 5.9 rare earthquake in North Korea today

July 12, 2013: A rare earthquake measuring 5.9 in magnitude has been recorded in North Korea.  The earthquake in North Korea today occurred at a greater depth of 559km. The epicenter was located 181 km ESE of Hoemul-li and 190km ESE of Chongjin in the Sea of Japan. Earlier, North Korea causes most of the seismic events occurred in North Korea due to underground nuclear bomb tests . But based on current location and depth, the initial indications showed that the earthquake was not caused by a North Korean nuclear test.

North Korea flooding kills 40, affects thousands

Flooding triggered by heavy downpour has claimed lives of at least 40 people in North Korea, the International Federation of the Red Cross and North Korean media said. More than 11,000 people have been affected by the floods, which hit the northeastern city of Rajin, near the border with Russia and China, on Saturday and Sunday, Reuters reported quoting Hler Gudjonsson, a spokesman for the Red Cross in Beijing.

North Korea has been hit by the worst drought in a century causing fears of chronic food shortages. North Korea suffered a devastating famine in the 1990s and has relied on international food aid where the United Nations says almost a third of children under five are stunted because of poor nutrition, Reuters reported.

North Korea flood leaves 8 dead or missing

Floods in North Korea have left eight dead or missing and made more than 23,000 people homeless. According to the Korean Central News Agency, torrential rains have caused huge flood damage in central part of the country leading to five deaths and three missing. Up to 413 mm rainfall has been recorded in Tongsin county over three days, Agence France-Presse has reported quoting weather service officials. South Korea flood also swept away over 40 vehicles in a parking lot in the Tan Stream. North Korea flood claims 2, about 760 homeless

Flooding in North Korea has claimed lives of two people and made 760 people homeless, Korean authorities said today. According to the Korean Central News Agency, flood damage occurred in the central DPRK. North Korea flood has damaged more than 150 houses and 1,720 hectares of farmland mainly in South Hamkyong, North Hwanghae and Kangwon area. Heavy rainfall caused flooding in North Korea. More than 200 millimeters of rains have been recorded in dozens of North Korean towns. Earthquake felt in Seoul, South Korea

Moderate earthquake with magnitude 4.8 hit along the coast of North and South Korea (Yellow Sea) today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 76km WSW of Ongjin. It was 8.4 miles deep. Tremor was felt as far as Seoul, South Korea. Seoul is the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea. Magnitude 2.7 earthquake hit South Korea in April 2013.
