Tropical Cyclone Eloise kills 12 in Mozambique and Zimbabwe

January 24, 2021: Tropical Cyclone Eloise has claimed lives of nine people in Mozambique and three in Zimbabwe. Cyclone Eloise caused damage in in Beira, Manica, and Quelimane areas of  Mozambique. According to the Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), the cyclone has damaged around 1069 homes, 11 hospitals and nine schools. Tropical Cyclone Eloise made landfall just south of the port city of Beira, Mozambique on January 23, 2021.  Eloise is the 5th named storm of the 2020/21 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season.

Flooding in Mozambique kills 28 dead — Leaves 58,000 affected

January 23, 2020: Flooding in Mozambique since December 2019 has claimed lives of at least 28 people, injuring 66 and affecting more than 58,000. The worst flood hit provinces have been identified as Zambezia, Cabo Delgado and Sofala where around 17,432 people, 13,169 and 6,328 have been affected respectively.  Flooding disaster damaged more than 10,200 houses. National Disaster Management Institute (INGC) has provided assistance to around 10,000 people.

Flooding in Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique kills six

January 16, 2020: Recent floodings in Cabo Delgado Province of Mozambique have claimed lives of at least six people and left three others missing. Floodwater has affected Muidumbe, Nangade, Mueda and Palma e Mocímboa da Praia districts of northern Mozambique. In December 2019, heavy downpour washed away a bridge on Montepuez river (Cabo Delgato). Also in 2019, t ropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth caused damage in Mozambique.

Mozambique: Cyclone Idai kills 10, affects 62,975 people

March 12, 2019: Flooding caused by tropical cyclone Idai has claimed lives of 10 people and affected around 62,975 people in Mozambique. Cyclone Idai has currently intensified to that of a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific oceans. At its peak intensity, Idai's strength may be equal to a super typhoon or a strong Category 4 or even a Category 5 hurricane,  AccuWeather reported. According to AccuWeather , Idai is now expected to strike central Mozambique on Friday. "At least 120,000 people are at risk of flooding and heavy rains in the coming days," the UN said. Following the current projection, residents of Beira, Chiloane, Nova Sofala and Chinde will be at high risk from the cyclone Idai. The precursor of Idai affected Malawi and Mozambique. Flood kills three in Mozambican city of Pemba

Flooding triggered by heavy rainfall has claimed lives of at least three people in Pemba in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. In Natite, some buildings are underwater due to flash floods, Star Africa reported quoting the Municipal Council of Pemba.

Mozambique lightning strikes: 4 killed, 8 injured in Zambezia

Lightning strikes in Mozambique have claimed lives of four people and injured eight others during storms, All Africa reported quoting the Beira daily paper, "Diario de Mocambique". The lightning strikes killed people in the Chinde, Gile and Milange districts in Zambezia province of Mozambique. According to the National Disasters Management Institute (INGC), dozen of shops and houses have been damaged in Lugela. Heavy rainfall and flooding have washed away roads in several parts of Sofala.
