Flooding and landslides in Rwanda and Burundi kill 9

April 21, 2020: Severe flooding and landslides in Rwanda and Burundi have claimed lives of at least nine people and affected 27,000 people from April 17 to 20, 2020. Heavy rainfall triggered landslides in the district of Gicumbi in the Northern Province of Rwanda, with the most affected areas being Nyankenke and Kageyo sectors. Heavy rainfall wiped off the cobblestone road in an area commonly known as "Ku Ntaraga" in Kimisagara. Meteo Rwanda has issued heavy rainfall warnings until April 26, 2020.

Burundi floods, landslides kill 60

Flooding and landslides in Burundi have claimed lives of at least 60 people, the Burundi Red Cross officials said. The natural disaster in Burundi, which started Sunday, has injured over 100 people and destroyed more than 400 houses. Flooding and landslides have caused huge damage in capital Bujumbura and neighboring provinces of Cibitoke and Bubanza. According to the Xinhua News Service, the whole city of Bujumbura has suffered from blackout. Burundi's Security Minister Gabriel Nizigama said the government will provide the homeless with food and money for burial and new house construction. Lightning strike in Burundi has claimed lives of at least seven students and injured 51 others, international medias reported. Lightning bolt hit the classroom where the high school students were sheltering from a severe storm. Heavy rains have destroyed more than 500 houses in the area.
