Two earthquakes jolt Kuwait today: KUNA

Two earthquakes jolted north of Kabd and south of Jahra areas today, the national network for monitoring earthquakes at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research said.
The two tremors measured 5.2 and 3.7 on the Richter scale and occurred around 04:31 pm local time, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported.

A massive sinkhole has been reported on a road near Highway 101 along the coast of southern Oregon.
"The sinkhole widened Thursday afternoon west of the highway in the town of Harbor," KPTV-TV reported quoting the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Sonic boom causes shaking in New Jersey: USGS

People across New Jersey and parts of New York and Connecticut felt multiple tremors on Thursday afternoon which were actually sonic booms caused by the testing of a fighter jet.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), at least  nine sonic booms were recorded over the course of an hour and a half. Earthquake-like shaking was felt from southern New Jersey along the Eastern Seaboard to Long Island, New York.

Flash flood in Kampung Oh, Malaysia caused evacuation of at least six people including two children.
The flash flood happened due to the failure of an irrigation gate near Jalan Chabang Tiga, at Kampung Oh, New Straits Times reported quoting State Fire and Rescue Department public relation officer Rozizah Abnihajar.

600 evacuated amid Hawick flood warning in Scotland

Around 600 people have been evacuated from low-lying parts of Hawick after severe flood warnings were issued in the areas.
Emergency rest centres have been established at the Teviot Leisure Centre in Hawick and at Jedburgh Town Hall due to rising river levels and risk to property, BBC reported.

"Two piles of mining waste located between Suttaung and Shansu villages collapsed on Monday afternoon," The Irrawaddy reported.

Magnitude 4.2 light earthquake rattled Siraha at 06:17 am Wednesday morning, Nepal Seismological Center reported.

This is the fresh earthquake (not aftershock of Gorkha earthquake) with epicenter located near Krishnapur Birta.

Mudslide at France's nuclear waste management agency kills 1

One person was killed on Tuesday in a mudslide at a laboratory of France's national nuclear waste management agency in the northeast of the country, the emergency services said.
At least two people were working at the site which is being prepared to receive highly radioactive nuclear waste, which would be stored at a depth of 500 metres (1,650 feet), France 24 reported.

Severe weather in Taiwan has claimed lives of at least 85 people, mostly from hypothermia and the onset of cardiovascular diseases.
Snowstorm killed 66 people in Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan, further 16 died in Kaohsiung and three in Pingtung, Shanghaiist reported.

Nearly 1,000 people have been evacuated as Mount Egon volcano in East Nusa Tenggara of Indonesia erupted with hot ash and toxic gas.
As many as 927 people living in the dangerous evacuation zone of 3 kilometers have been evacuated to safer grounds, Xinhua reported quoting Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency.

The Mississippi and federal emergency agencies are operating five disaster recovery centers in Mississippi  to individuals affected by the December storms. The disaster recovery centers are located in Benton, Coahoma, Marshall, Quitman and Tippah counties, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mentioned in a press release issued on January 20, 2016.

Scotland launches its first national flood risk management plan

Scotland formally launched the country's first national flood risk management plan on Monday.
The flood risk management plan comprises 14 separate local strategies and identifies a total of 42 flood protection schemes that have been proposed for action over the next five years at a total cost of £235m.

A major tremor could hit Nepal’s Gorkha district within years rather than the centuries that usually pass between quakes, researchers say predicting Nepal earthquake.
The research entitled “Himalayan megathrust geometry and relation to topography revealed by the Gorkha earthquake” published in journal Nature Geoscience on 11 January 2016 claims that magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Gorkha in April 2015 generated about 1 m of uplift in the Kathmandu Basin, yet caused the high Himalaya farther north to subside by about 0.6 m.

Californians purchase 28,000 new flood insurance policies; increase of 12% in recent history

The latest data released by National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Policies has shown an increase of 28,084 new flood insurance policies purchased in California from August 31 – November 30, 2015.
“The major increase in flood policies show Californians are taking the threat seriously and taking powerful steps to protect their families and property.  Those who may need and not have a flood policy should act today, as policies generally take 30 days to go into effect,” The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region 9 Administrator Robert Fenton said in a report issued on January 6, 2016.

Australia: Newcastle hit by heaviest rain in 154 years

Newcastle, Australian state of New South Wales,  has faced its wettest January day in 154 years after torrential rain batters the east coast.
"Newcastle experienced the most rainfall on a January day since records started back in 1862," The Daily Mail has written quoting the Bureau of Meteorology. Around 200.6 millimetres of rainfall has been recorded in Newcastle in last 24 hours.

Indian disaster management experts warn massive earthquake in himalayan region

The disaster management experts at the Ministry of Home Affairs in India have warned of mega earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.2 or greater in north India in near future, much stronger than the one that struck Manipur on Monday.
"The interconnected plates across Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and India pose a bigger danger, and predicted a disaster of bigger magnitude, National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) Director Santosh Kumar said Times of India (TOI).

Three recent strong earthquakes have re-ruptured the plates; Magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Nepal-India border in 2011, magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Nepal in April 2015 and magnitude 6.7 recent earthquake in Manipur in January 2016. These have led to conditions which might trigger multiple earthquakes which may go up to 8.0 in magnitude, the disaster management expert warned.

An artificial earthquake of magnitude 5.1 has been detected in North Korea Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. local time near the site of previous nuclear tests.
Later, North Korea confirmed that it had conducted a powerful hydrogen bomb test, The Associated Press reported.

2015 natural disaster insurance cost falls lowest in six years

The natural disaster insurance cost in 2015 has fallen to its lowest in six years, Germany-based reinsurer Munich Re published its annual Natural Disaster Review on Monday.
The lowest insurance costs worldwide since 2009 was because of the reduced hurricane activity in the North Atlantic of El Nino weather phenomenon. Weather caused 94% of catastrophes including storms, floods and earthquakes last year, according to data from reinsurer Munich Re.
