Two earthquakes jolt Kuwait today: KUNA

Two earthquakes jolted north of Kabd and south of Jahra areas today, the national network for monitoring earthquakes at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research said. The two tremors measured 5.2 and 3.7 on the Richter scale and occurred around 04:31 pm local time, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported.

A massive sinkhole has been reported on a road near Highway 101 along the coast of southern Oregon. "The sinkhole widened Thursday afternoon west of the highway in the town of Harbor," KPTV-TV reported quoting the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Sonic boom causes shaking in New Jersey: USGS

People across New Jersey and parts of New York and Connecticut felt multiple tremors on Thursday afternoon which were actually sonic booms caused by the testing of a fighter jet. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), at least  nine sonic booms were recorded over the course of an hour and a half. Earthquake-like shaking was felt from southern New Jersey along the Eastern Seaboard to Long Island, New York.

Mudslide at France's nuclear waste management agency kills 1

One person was killed on Tuesday in a mudslide at a laboratory of France's national nuclear waste management agency in the northeast of the country, the emergency services said. At least two people were working at the site which is being prepared to receive highly radioactive nuclear waste, which would be stored at a depth of 500 metres (1,650 feet), France 24 reported.

Scotland formally launched the country's first national flood risk management plan on Monday. The research entitled “Himalayan megathrust geometry and relation to topography revealed by the Gorkha earthquake” published in journal Nature Geoscience on 11 January 2016 claims that magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Gorkha in April 2015 generated about 1 m of uplift in the Kathmandu Basin, yet caused the high Himalaya farther north to subside by about 0.6 m.

Californians purchase 28,000 new flood insurance policies; increase of 12% in recent history

The latest data released by National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Policies has shown an increase of 28,084 new flood insurance policies purchased in California from August 31 – November 30, 2015. “The major increase in flood policies show Californians are taking the threat seriously and taking powerful steps to protect their families and property.  Those who may need and not have a flood policy should act today, as policies generally take 30 days to go into effect,” The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region 9 Administrator Robert Fenton said in a report issued on January 6, 2016.

2015 natural disaster insurance cost falls lowest in six years

The natural disaster insurance cost in 2015 has fallen to its lowest in six years, Germany-based reinsurer Munich Re published its annual Natural Disaster Review on Monday. The lowest insurance costs worldwide since 2009 was because of the reduced hurricane activity in the North Atlantic of El Nino weather phenomenon. Weather caused 94% of catastrophes including storms, floods and earthquakes last year, according to data from reinsurer Munich Re .
