Nepal Earthquake Prediction: USGS expects strong aftershocks possible in next 30 days

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors earthquakes across the world, estimated it is most likely that 0 to 5 earthquakes from magnitude 5 to 6 will occur and that the chance of at least one such aftershock is about 62%. USGS expects the event to occur within the month of May 27 to June 26, 2015.

President Barack Obama has signed a disaster declaration for Texas following recent flooding in the area.

He ordered federal aid to supplement other recovery efforts in the area affected by severe weather. The President's action makes federal funding available to affected individuals in Harris, Hays, and Van Zandt counties.

Japan earthquake today measuring 8.5 magnitude strikes near Ogasawara islands

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.5 struck near the Ogasawara islands at 8:24 p.m. Saturday, Japan Meteorology Agency (JMA) reported.

Magnitude 4.0 aftershock rattles Kathmandu again

Nepal Seismological Center has recorded another magnitude 4.0 aftershock in Kathmandu at 01:52 am local time.

The epicenter was located behind Nagarjuna Forest near Chhatre Deurali around 12 km NW of Kathmandu. It is in the border region of Dhading, Nuwakot and Kathmandu.

Heat wave India 2015: More than 1,400 killed

A week long heat wave in India has claimed lives of more than 1,400 people.

At least 1,020 people have died in the heat wave in southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh. Another 340 have died in the neighboring state of Telangana. Other casualties are from the eastern states of West Bengal and Orissa, The Hindu reported.

Freak tornado rips through Ciudad Acuna, Mexico killing 13

At least 13 people have died after a freak tornado ripped through the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Acuna on Monday morning.
Fatalities include 10 adults and three children, Coahuila Governor Ruben Moreira said on a visit to the disaster area.

Saitama earthquake rattles Tokyo – Briefly closes subways, airport

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 hit Saitama-ken Hokubu region, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.
According to JMA, the earthquake had an intensity of 4 in parts Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo and Kanagawa. Earthquake intensity of 3 was felt in parts of Fukushima, Yamanashi, Nagano and Shizuoka. It was 31.06 miles deep.

Tremor felt in Kathmandu Saturday night

Magnitude 4.4 aftershock hit Sindhupalchowk at 10:26 pm Saturday night, Nepal Seismological Center reported.

This is the second aftershock of magnitude greater than four recorded in Nepal today. Earlier, magnitude 4.2 aftershock rattled Dolakha at 1:14 pm local time.

At least four aftershocks jolt Nepal today

At least four aftershocks have been recorded in Nepal today as of 8:00 pm.
Magnitude 4.2 aftershock was first recorded in Dhading/Nuwakot border region at 02:45 pm. After two hours, another magnitude 4.8 aftershocks rattled the same region. It was even felt in capital city Kathmandu.

Disaster Recovery Center in Franklin County to close on May 23

A disaster recovery center in Franklin County will close Saturday, May 23, at 6 p.m. (EDT).  The disaster recovery center is operated by the commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

After the center closes, help is still available to survivors who suffered losses in Bath, Bourbon, Carter, Elliott, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Madison, Rowan and Scott counties during the severe April storms.

Magnitude 4.0 light earthquake hit United Kingdom today at 02:52 am local time, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located just 2 km (1mi) W of Ramsgate. It was 3.1 miles deep.

Rainfall kills 7 in China's Fujian Province

Heavy rainfall in east China's Fujian Province has left seven dead, one missing and affected 242,000 people.
Heavy rains have destroyed 2,490 houses and damaged 21,300 hectares of farm produce, Xinhua has written quoting the provincial drought and flood prevention office.

USGS expects magnitude 5 to 6 aftershock in Nepal this week

There is 40% chance of at least one magnitude 5 to 6 aftershock within the week of May 20 to May 26, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) mentioned in the Aftershock Advisory updated on May 20, 2015.
People are urged to remain aware of the possibility of aftershocks in the coming weeks and months, especially when working in or around vulnerable structures or in landslide-prone areas.

Colombia Landslide News: At least 78 dead

At least 78 people have been killed when heavy rains caused the river Liboriana to burst is banks, triggering the landslide in Colombia.
Landslide has damaged houses of more than 500 people, Reuters has written quoting the national disaster unit. About 1,000 people have been evacuated to nearby shelters.

Reunion active volcano Piton de la Fournaise shows new eruption

A new volcanic eruption has been observed at Piton de la Fournaise volcano in Reunion Island on Sunday at 13:45 pm.
The small volcanic eruption at Piton de la Fournaise formed a fissure vent at the the southeast slopes of the Dolomieux crater inside the Enclos next to the Château Fort cone, Volcano Discovery reported.

4.4 tremor hits Dolakha, Nepal today

Magnitude 4.4 aftershock has been recorded at 05:00 Sunday morning with epicenter in Dolakha, Nepal Seismological Center reported.

The epicenter was located in between Sunkhani and Kuri village.

Gorkha earthquake produces at least five aftershocks today

At least five aftershocks have been recorded today in Nepal as of 07:00 am local time.
According to Nepal Seismological center, magnitude 4.0 aftershock occurred at 02:15 am Saturday morning with epicenter in Gorkha. It was followed by magnitude 4.1 aftershock with epicenter in Dolakha at 04:28 am. Another, magnitude 4.1 aftershock rattled Dolakha again after 10 minutes. At 06:11 am, magnitude 4.0 aftershock was recorded in Nuwakot. The latest aftershock was recorded at 06:31 am with epicenter in Gorkha/Dhading border region.

Moderate aftershock hits Nepal Friday morning

Magnitude 5.5 aftershock has been recorded in Dhading, Nepal at 07:27 am local time.
It is the strongest aftershock after the May 12 major aftershock on Tuesday.

Wheeler County in Oregon declared as primary natural disaster area

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has declared Wheeler County in Oregon as a primary natural disaster area due to damages and losses caused by a recent drought.

Nepal’s emergency preparedness plan worked well – WHO

The emergency preparedness plans implemented by the Government of Nepal have ensured that key elements of the health sector remained ready and able to function during the recent earthquakes, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) said.
The practice of hospital retrofitting has been a core part of Nepal’s emergency preparedness plans and helped keep the largest hospitals in the capital city of Kathmandu working throughout the major earthquakes, UN News Center has written quoting WHO.

Camera captures earthquake triggered landslide in Dhunche, Nepal

The latest earthquake in Nepal on May 12 has triggered a landslide in Dhunche in Rasuwa district of Nepal.
Video footage of the landslide was captured by James Shaw for the Canadian Red Cross. The Canadian Red Cross has setup a field hospital in the area.

At least three aftershocks rattles Nepal Thursday morning

At least three aftershocks have been recorded Thursday morning till 07:00 am, The Nepal Seismological Center reported.
Magnitude 4.3 earthquake was recorded at 00:16 am midnight with epicenter in Dolakha. Another 4.1 was recorded at 03:13 am in the same location. At 03:23 am, a moderate earthquake with magnitude 5.0 hit Dolakha again.

Fresh Dolakha, Nepal earthquake kills 17 in India

A second powerful earthquake in less than three weeks in Nepal on Tuesday has claimed lives of at least 79 people, including 17 in neighbouring India and one in Chinese Tibet.

Seventeen people have been killed in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh region of India.

According to Nepal Seismological Center, magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit Dolakha/Sindhupalchowk border region at 12:50 pm local time. It was followed by magnitude 6.2 at 13:21 with epicenter in Dolakha. However, U.S. Geological Survey reported magnitude 7.3 earthquake with epicenter near Namche Bazar, the gateway to Mount Everest.

National Seismological Centre expects more aftershocks today, please stay outside

The National Seismological Centre, Department of Mines and Geology, has urged people not to hurry back to homes and better to stay in safe places for at least two days.
The National Seismological Centre stated that Tuesday's tremor measuring 6.8 on Richter scale was an aftershock of the 7.6 Richter scale earthquake that struck Gorkha on April 25, 2015. The epicentre of today’s earthquake falls within rupture area of the April 25 main shock.

Major earthquakes hit Dolakha/Sindhupalchowk border region today

At least 56 people have died in different parts of Nepal. Highest fatalities have been reported from Dolakha. At least 33 people have been reported died in Dolakha alone as of 07:00 pm.

In Sindhupalchowk, at least nine people died. Similarly, three died in Ramechhap, two in Sindhuli. At least five people died in Kathmandu valley.

One each died in Dhanusha, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Gorkha.

According to Home Ministry, at least 1,100 people injured in today's quake. Nepal Seismological has reported at least nine major earthquakes today.

Tornado causes damage in Taranaki town, New Zealand

A tornado has caused damage in Taranaki town, near New Plymouth, ripping off a roof and uprooting trees. A petrol station in a Taranaki town was damaged by the tornado, Radio New Zealand mentioned.
The storm set off sirens and car alarms, New Zealand news and information website, Stuff has written quoting the local resident.

Tornadoes in Texas and Arkansas kill 5

At least five people died after tornadoes battered several small communities in Texas and Arkansas.

More than two dozen tornadoes ripped through parts of Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Texas on Sunday, USA Today has written quoting National Weather Service meteorologist, Greg Carbin as saying.

Typhoon Noul kills 2 in Philippines

Typhoon Noul (local name: Dodong) has claimed lives of at least two people in Philippines and forced evacuations of thousands others.
Typhoon Noul entered the Philippine area of Responsibility on May 7 forcing the evacuation of around 2,500 people in Northern Luzon.

Tornado in Delmont, South Dakota injures 9 – Residents asked to evacuate

Tornado in Delmont, South Dakota has injured at least nine people and damaged dozens of buildings.
Residents of Delmont are being asked to leave the town for the safety reason.
The tornado struck the town around 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Tornado damaged about 20 buildings, including Zion Lutheran Church. According to Star Tribune, Children who were in school took shelter in the basement when the tornado hit.

Gorkha earthquake generates four aftershocks, new quake recorded in Udayapur

Magnitude 4.0 earthquake hit Udayapur at 02:44 am Sunday morning, the Nepal Seismological Center reported.
This is the first new earthquake to shake Nepal other than the aftershocks of April 25, 2015 quake.

Venus earthquake today becomes largest quake to strike North Texas

Magnitude 4.0 earthquake hit Venus, Texas today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 5 km (3mi) NNW of Venus. It was 2.0 miles deep.

Dolakha/Sindhupalchok earthquake panics people in Kathmandu

Magnitude 5.0 moderate earthquake hit Dolakha/Sindhupalchowk border region Friday morning, the Nepal Seismological Center (NSC) reported.
According to the Nepal Seismological Center, the earthquake occurred at 06:17 am. Earlier magnitude 4.0 earthquake hit Sindhupalchowk at 02:19 am. NSC has categorized both the earthquakes as the aftershocks of Gorkha earthquake.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flash flood emergency for the first time in Oklahoma City metro area.
Over 3 inches of rain fell at Will Rodgers World Airport in the span of a single hour on Wednesday. Furthermore, the National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma states that 7.10 inches throughout the day, making it the wettest May day on record, The Weather Channel has written.

At least two aftershocks have been recorded in Nepal with epicenter in Nuwakot on Thursday morning.

The earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred around 03:41 am which was well felt in capital Kathmandu. Another earthquake with magnitude 4.0 hit the same epicenter Nuwakot around 07:56 am, The Nepal Seismological Center reported.

The largest event was a small earthquake of magnitude 2.2 on April 26, at 10:03 PM MDT, located about 5 miles northeast of Lake, WY.

Tornado causes extensive damage in German town of Buetzow

At least 30 people have been injured by flying debris in the district of Rostock Butzow. A hospital and a nursing home are among the damaged buildings, German newspaper Die Welt reported.
The railway line between Hamburg and Luebeck has been blocked in both directions by a fallen tree.
According to BBC, wind speeds of up to 119km/h (74mph) in Geilenkirchen north of Aachen.

Powerful earthquake in Papua New Guinea generates Tsunami

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea has generated a tsunami estimated at under 1 meter (3 feet) in the harbor of Rabaul, a town near the epicenter.

The earthquake hit Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, bringing down power lines and cracking walls, but causing no widespread damage, The Huffington Post reported.

At least two aftershocks with magnitude greater than 4 have been recorded in Nepal on Tuesday.

Light earthquake with magnitude 4.0 was recorded at 06:39 am with epicenter in the border of Dhading and Nuwakot. Another magnitude 4.3 shock was felt around 04:23 pm with epicenter in the border of Sindhupalchowk and Dolakha.

Eight fresh tremors jolt Nepal

At least eight aftershocks have been recorded in Nepal on Monday, National Seismological center reported.

Three earthquakes had epicenter in Nuwakot and others in Dolakha, Rasuwa, Gorkha and Sindhupalchowk.

The highest magnitude was of 4.7 with epicenter in Dolakha. At least five tremors were well felt in and around capital Kathmandu.

Lightning kills 12 in Bangladesh

Lightning in seven different districts of Bangladesh has claimed lives of at least 12 people. Lightning hit Sunamganj, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Gaibandha, Bagerhat, Dinajpur and Mymensingh districts of Bangladesh.

Lighting in Dirai, Tahirpur and Dharampasha upazilas of Sunamganj district killed four and injured three others, The Daily Star reported. At least two died in Dirai upazila.

Three aftershocks recorded in Gorkha, Dhading today

At least three aftershocks have been recorded in Gorkha and Dhading region of Nepal today, National Seismological Center mentioned.

The first earthquake of magnitude 4.1 hit Gorkha at 00:02 UTC (05:47 am local time). Two hours later, magnitude 4.1 earthquake rattled Dhading. The third earthquake with magnitude 4.5 hit Dhading again at 05:01 UTC.
